Backpacking in Guyam Island
🌟 Highlightbeach ranked #12
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 23, 2026

You know that photo of “deserted tropical island” everyone edits to death? Guyam Island is the rare place where the real thing actually looks close enough that you don’t need to spend an hour fixing it in Lightroom. It’s a tiny palm-fringed sand dot off General Luna, Siargao, in the southern Philippines, usually visited on half-day island-hopping trips. The water is clear, swimming is easy, and the reef has decent snorkel potential if you’re not spoiled by Palawan. It’s clean but not pristine, and it can feel like a picnic park when the tour boats stack up. No surf, no real budget stays or food on the island itself, just simple snacks and fees, so you sleep and eat back in General Luna. Compared with nearby Cloud 9 or the beaches around Daku and Naked Island, Guyam is more “cute intermission” than main event—worth it if you’re already in Siargao, not worth a flight on its own.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #12 beach in Philippines
Why visitors keep coming back

Guyam Island beach is a backpacker’s haven for good reason. The laid-back atmosphere invites you to kick off your shoes and forget about the world. It’s affordable, so your wallet won’t scream as you sip on a cold drink while lounging in a hammock. The social scene is vibrant, with fellow travelers swapping stories and laughter, making it feel like a spontaneous reunion. Plus, the water access is a dream—crystal-clear and perfect for a quick dip. Think of it as a connector on your coastal route, a place to pause, recharge, and soak in the absurdity of travel before diving back into the adventure.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  • Snorkeling right off the sand — The reef is shallow and clear so you don’t need to swim far to see colorful reef fish and coral patches; it’s perfect for quick, relaxed snorkel sessions between boat trips. (Personal favorite: easiest way to feel like you found a tiny underwater world without hauling gear.)
  • Hammock-and-coconut-shade lounging — Guyam is tiny and ringed with leaning coconut palms; set up a hammock, nap to the sound of waves, and you’re basically on a postcard with zero effort. It’s the kind of chill that feels curated but totally natural.
  • 360° shoreline walk and photography — You can walk the whole island in 10-20 minutes, which makes for instant variety: different light angles, dramatic palm silhouettes, and shallow reefs framing every shot. Great for golden-hour photos

  • Island-hopping micro-archipelago circuit — Guyam is usually visited as part of a short loop with nearby tiny islands. The contrast—palms on Guyam, bare sand on the others—makes the trip feel like three different beaches in one morning, and local boatmen will drop you right where the water’s best.
  • Sunset-to-stargazing calm — There aren’t bars or nightlife on the island, which is the point: stay a little later (if your boat allows) and you get unobstructed sunset views and low-light skies ideal for stargazing. It’s quiet, low-key, and surprisingly cinematic once the sun dips.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Expect higher prices for boats and accommodations during peak season. Off-season deals exist but come with the risk of weather-related cancellations.

Pro-tip: Aim for the shoulder months—November or May—when the weather’s mostly dry, crowds thin, and prices ease up. You get the best of both worlds without the full tourist circus or the monsoon gamble.

🛏️ Where to stay? How to pick the right area

Staying near Guyam Island Beach? You’re in for a treat. The area around General Luna is your best bet. It’s buzzing with backpackers, making it easy to find your tribe. Look for spots that offer communal spaces; nothing beats swapping stories over a cold drink after a day in the sun.

The vibe is laid-back, with plenty of budget-friendly eateries serving up fresh seafood. Just a short boat ride gets you to Guyam, so you can hop over for a day of lounging or snorkeling. Safety is solid here, but keep your wits about you—common sense is your best travel buddy.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Guyam Island beach is generally a chill spot for swimming, but keep an eye on the tides. Currents can sneak up on you, especially during the afternoon when the waves pick up. Locals know where to swim—follow their lead. Jellyfish occasionally drift in, but they’re more of a nuisance than a threat.

The sun can be relentless, so slather on that sunscreen and take breaks in the shade. Theft isn’t rampant, but don’t leave your valuables unattended while you’re splashing around. Enjoy the water, but stay aware; it’s all part of the adventure.
