- Summit and crater rim — The main draw: a steep, classic stratovolcano summit that rewards you with raw volcanic scenery and wide-open views. The final push can be tough and muddy, but reaching the rim feels proper — sunrise from here is my personal favorite for the glow on the Cotabato plains and Sarangani Bay.
- Montane and mossy forests — High-elevation cloud forest with moss-draped trunks, thick undergrowth and a cool, damp microclimate. These forests feel ancient and are great for short, sensory hikes where mist and silence are the main attractions.

- Streams, cascades and mountain springs — Small clear streams thread the slopes and form handy cascades and pools along the trails. Perfect for a cold-soak mid-hike and a natural reminder that this is still rugged, wet country — also a good source of fresh water for refilling (treat it).
- Rich plant life: orchids, ferns and understory diversity — The slopes host a lush mix of orchids, tree ferns and understory plants you don’t see in lowland forest. It’s a quiet, plant-geek heaven — look close and you’ll find surprises on trunks and leaf litter.
- Panoramic viewpoints over Cotabato plains and Sarangani Bay — Several lookout spots on the lower and mid slopes give sweeping views of the surrounding plains, nearby towns and, on clear days, the shimmering Sarangani Bay. Great for photography and gauging just how steep your next downhill is.
- Cultural landscape and Blaan sacred areas — Mount Matutum is culturally important to local indigenous communities. Trails cross ancestral lands and certain spots are considered sacred. Respect, permits and hiring a local guide are part of the experience — and you’ll learn more about the place for it.
