Backpacking in Wysoka
👀 For curious travelershike ranked #10
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 11, 2026

Most guides sell Wysoka as a gentle Pieniny viewpoint; the surprise is how quickly it turns into a proper leg-burner if you move at backpacker pace. Wysoka sits in southern Poland, in the Pieniny range near the Slovak border, east of Zakopane. The trail is short-to-medium, but it climbs hard enough that you’ll feel it, especially with a full pack, and the forested switchbacks don’t give you many warm‑up meters. In return, the summit punches above its weight: jagged Pieniny ridges, the Dunajec valley, and distant Tatras if the air is clear. Access by bus to nearby villages is straightforward, far easier than many Tatra starts, and the hike itself is less crowded and less formal than the big-name Polish routes.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #10 hike in Poland
The unique appeal for travelers

Wysoka is a backpacker’s dream in Poland, where the scenery-to-effort ratio is off the charts. You’ll start with a brisk ascent that gets your heart pumping, but the payoff? Jaw-dropping views of the Tatra Mountains that make every step worth it. The trail is accessible via public transport, making it easy to hop on a bus or train from nearby towns.

Cost? Minimal. You can tackle this hike without breaking the bank, leaving you with cash for that first cold beer at the end. The flexibility of distances means you can tailor your trek to fit your energy level, whether you’re in for a quick jaunt or a full-day adventure.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while hiking the Wysoka

  • Summit panorama over the Dunajec Gorge — the payoff is an open, sweeping view down into the winding Dunajec River; the steep drop and wide outlook make sunrise/sunset shots and long-distance views (Tatras on a clear day) much more dramatic than on average forested hills.
  • Trzy Korony (Three Crowns) vista — Wysoka gives one of the best angles on this iconic Pieniny massif, so you get that classic postcard silhouette framed by ridgelines rather than seeing it head-on from a busy viewpoint.
  • Dunajec meanders and rafting scenes — unlike many mountain hikes, this trail lets you watch traditional rafts and river traffic winding below; that human element — raftsmen, tiny boats against deep green water — adds a living, cultural foreground to the natural scenery.
  • Limestone cliffs and narrow ridge

  • Limestone cliffs and narrow ridge walking — short but rocky sections, exposed ledges and craggy limestone give the hike a more alpine, hands-on feel compared with smooth, tree-covered trails; it’s compact drama without a long scramble.
  • Seasonal meadows, butterflies and birds of prey — in summer the slopes bloom with mountain flowers and attract swarms of butterflies; keep an eye up for raptors riding the thermals — the mix of open pasture, grazing sheep culture and wildlife is very Pieniny.

Wysoka offers a straightforward yet invigorating hike, but don’t underestimate the terrain. The trail can be steep in sections, so expect to engage your legs and lungs. Good footwear is essential; sturdy hiking boots will keep you stable on rocky patches and muddy spots.
