Backpacking in Paul do Boquilobo Nature Reserve
👌 Worth visitingnational park ranked #14
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 23, 2026

Most guides sell Paul do Boquilobo as a birdwatcher’s paradise, but the surprise for backpackers is how tiny and quickly “done” it feels if you’re expecting a full hiking park. This wetland reserve sits near Golegã in central Portugal, between the Tagus and Almonda rivers. Trails are short, flat, and often muddy, with great birdlife in spring but limited scenery variety, no real camping, and very basic access by public transport. It’s cheap, quiet, and low-key, but compared with bigger areas like Serra de Aire e Candeeiros, it’s a half-day detour, not a base.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  • White stork colony — One of the reserve’s signature sights: dozens (sometimes hundreds) of white stork nests dotting trees and poles. Watching adults bring food to chicks is loud, messy and oddly addictive—best in spring and early summer.
  • Diverse waterbird assemblage and migration spectacle — A Ramsar-listed wetland, Boquilobo hosts huge numbers of herons, egrets, ducks and waders during migration and winter—great for big flocks, striking plumage and birdwatcher bingo.
  • Reedbeds and flooded meadows — The mosaic of shallow pools, reeds and seasonally flooded pastures is what makes the reserve special: it’s a top habitat for breeding birds, amphibians and dragonflies and changes dramatically with the seasons.

  • Birdwatching hides and observation towers — A handful of hides and lookout points let you get close without spooking wildlife. Bring a scope or a long lens; dawn and dusk are magical and much quieter.
  • Interpretation Centre (Centro de Interpretação) — Small but useful: maps, exhibits about the wetland ecology, and info on guided walks. Good place to plan your route and find out what’s currently nesting or migrating.
  • Paddling the marsh channels (canoe/kayak) — If permitted and available, a quiet paddle through the channels puts you eye-level with waterbirds and reed fringes. It’s a peaceful, immersive way to see the reserve—check local rules and guides.
  • Easy walking and cycling routes — Flat, low-effort trails and country lanes make the reserve an easy half-day or full-day outing. Sunrise or sunset walks along the levees reward you with beautiful light and good wildlife activity.
