The crater rim trailhead at Pas de Bellecombe has free parking and a clear, well-marked path, so you can walk onto an active volcano without a guide or a permit. Piton de la Fournaise sits in the southeast of Réunion, a few hours' drive from the west coast resorts and a short climb above the Plaine des Sables. The reward is raw: black basalt crunching underfoot, the sharp whiff of sulfur near the vents, and wind that strips your breath at 2,400 meters. The classic loop to the summit crater is about 5 to 6 hours and moderate, though the lava rock is hard on ankles. Public buses stop far from the trailhead, so rent a car or book a shuttle. Cloud can drop in within minutes, wiping out visibility across the lava fields, where the route is marked only by white paint dabs on the rock. Stay on the marked path and turn back if you can’t see the next mark. Footing is uneven, sharp scoria, so wear sturdy shoes with ankle support; trainers wear out quickly here. Cold wind at 2,300 m catches people out, so carry a windproof layer, a hat and at least 2 liters of water, since there is none on the route and little shade. The summit sun is strong even when cool. Eruptions are monitored and the Enclos is closed when activity rises, so check the Observatoire and prefecture alerts the day before. Never cross barriers or approach fresh flows or fumes.
