A thin ribbon of water slides down a green cliff wall, and in the right light it really does look like a veil, which is why the stop is on every Salazie itinerary. What gets overlooked is the setting: the road beneath is lined with chayote vines, ferns and the damp, mineral smell of a cirque that rarely dries out. La Cascade du Voile de la Mariée sits in the Cirque de Salazie, in the east-central highlands of Réunion, on the road that climbs inland from the coast. Give the falls a short stop, ten to twenty minutes, because the view is roadside and there is no trail to speak of. The cirque around it, with its cloud drifting through the gorge and the hiss of water on rock, deserves your afternoon. After rain the veil thickens and roars. In a dry spell it thins to a wisp. Check the weather and go in the morning, before cloud fills the valley.

La Cascade du Voile de la Mariée earns its stop because it is the first big waterfall you meet on the climb into the Cirque de Salazie, and it costs you only the time to pull over. The water drops roughly 100 meters or more down the cliff, and you see it whole from the road, so there is no sweaty approach hike to justify.
