Travelers choose between sleeping in Le Tampon at 600 meters or staying down on the coast, and the cooler air and the volcano access tip it for anyone who wants early starts. Le Tampon sits in the southern highlands of Réunion, above Saint-Pierre. Mornings smell of wet earth, geranium and woodsmoke, and cloud often rolls in by afternoon, so pack a fleece. Buses are infrequent because most residents drive; a rental car solves that. It is not a party town, and hostels are scarce, so meeting backpackers takes effort. 2:30 PM, Trois-Mares back roads: This is the off-route stretch, with quiet lanes, cane fields and eucalyptus, where locals walk dogs and tend plots. Go before cloud thickens.

May to October is the cooler, drier stretch, with days around 16 to 22°C (61 to 72°F) and nights that can reach 5°C (41°F) up on the plain.

  • Summer (November to April): Warmer at 20 to 27°C (68 to 81°F), with afternoon downpours and about 13 hours of daylight. Cyclones are possible from January to March, and prices are lowest.
  • Shoulder (September to November): Dry, mild and quiet, with flowering fruit trees.
