The museum sits right beside the main road in Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts, so you can fit it in on the way to or from the beaches without any detour. Musée de Villèle is in the west of Réunion, inland and uphill from the Saint-Gilles resort strip, and the rooms are cooler than the coast. The house is the old home of Madame Desbassyns, with creaking wooden floors, dark furniture and a smell of old timber and polished wax. Visits are guided in French, so ask for the printed English text at the desk, since the guide does the storytelling. The story is uncomfortable: a sugar and slavery estate, told plainly. It is small, quiet and rarely crowded. History readers will like it most. Anyone wanting adrenaline or a quick photo stop will not.

Arrive when doors open in the morning for cooler rooms and a quiet house, and check the museum’s closing day, often Monday, before planning.
