Backpacking in Ciucas Mountains
👌 Worth visitinghike ranked #8

Most people only realize after they leave that Ciucaș gives you big-mountain drama for small-mountain effort and time. Tucked in the Curvature Carpathians, just north of Cheia in central Romania, it sits between Brașov and Ploiești, close enough to feel like a day trip but wild enough to feel like an escape. The hike throws you straight into odd rock towers, rolling alpine meadows, and wide views toward Bucegi and Piatra Craiului, without the crowds those ranges pull. Trails are moderate, with a few punchy, muddy climbs and exposed ridges when the weather turns. Public transport gets you reasonably close via Brașov or Ploiești plus a bus to Cheia, then you hustle a bit. It’s less epic than Făgăraș, but far more forgiving and way more relaxed.

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  1. Vârful Ciucaș (Ciucaș Peak) — The obvious must-see: a compact summit that rewards a short, sometimes-steep push with wide, unobstructed panoramas. On clear days you can pick out the Bucegi and Făgăraș ranges in the distance — great for sunrise or just a well-earned snack and a view.
  2. Ciucaș rock towers and mushroom stones — Weird, weather-sculpted spires and mushroom-shaped boulders line parts of the ridge. They give the massif a fairytale, almost lunar vibe and make for excellent photo stops and short scrambles that feel more interesting than a regular forest walk.
  3. Bratocea ridgewalk — A classic exposed crest that links several high points without long detours. It’s narrow, dramatic in places and changes quickly from rocky needles to grassy terraces, so you get variety in one stretch —

  4. Alpine meadows and shepherding culture — Between the rocks and tree line are wide poieni (meadows) where seasonal stâni (sheepfolds) and fresh cheese appear in summer. The patchwork of flowers, grazing sheep and simple huts gives the mountains a lived-in, pastoral feel that contrasts nicely with the jagged summits.
  5. Wildlife and quiet forests — The lower slopes are thick with beech and fir and are full of animal signs: deer, birds of prey, and in the broader Carpathian context even brown bears and foxes. Sightings aren’t guaranteed, but the combination of forest solitude and the chance of spotting wildlife makes the trails feel wilder than many better-trodden Romanian routes.

Dress in layers and pack a lightweight waterproof jacket. The trails are well-marked, but some sections are steep and rocky, demanding focus on your footing. Take your time; rushing can lead to slips.
