Backpacking in Losiny Ostrov
👍 Recommendednational park ranked #16
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 18, 2026

Most guides sell Losiny Ostrov as “Moscow’s wild forest,” but the surprise is how urban it feels: you’re never far from a road, tram line, or apartment block, even while watching real elk. Sitting on the northeast edge of Moscow, it’s a quick escape, not a deep-backcountry trip. Trails are easy, scenery is mixed birch–pine with some marsh, and wildlife sightings are possible but not guaranteed. Access is cheap and simple by metro and tram, but camping is basically off the table and budget beds are in the city, not the park. Crowds cluster near main entrances; step one junction away and it quiets down. Compared with Russia’s big hitters like Zavidovo or national parks in the Caucasus, Losiny Ostrov is tamer, flatter, and more managed, but for a backpacker killing a spare Moscow day without burning cash, it earns its keep.

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  • Wild moose (elk) sightings — The park’s namesake inhabitants actually roam here; you stand a decent chance of spotting a moose at dusk or dawn, sometimes surprisingly close to the trails, which is a rare urban-wildlife experience.
  • Mixed pine-birch forests and boggy hummocks — Classic Russian forest vibes: tall pines, silver birches, carpets of moss and blueberries, and the odd raised bog that makes the landscape feel properly wild even though you’re near Moscow.
  • Yauza and other river valleys — Small meandering streams and their wet meadows cut through the park, creating lush riparian habitat rich in flowers, frogs and insects — great for quiet, reflective walks and photos.

  • Hiking and cycling trail network — A tangle of marked trails and service roads lets you pick anything from a short nature loop to a half-day trek; routes are easy to combine so you can make a comfortable outing without a guide.
  • Birdwatching and wildlife hides — Expect woodland and wetland birds, plus chances of seeing hares or foxes; small hides and clearings let you watch without spooking the animals.
  • Historic hunting roads and cultural traces — Old carriage tracks, boundary markers and scattered village clearings remind you the park was once royal hunting grounds — adds a quiet historical layer to the nature walks.
  • Quiet winter landscapes and cross-country skiing — When snow comes, the forest goes very still and the groomed/packed tracks become perfect for skiing or long, crisp walks — a totally different mood from summer.
