Backpacking in Anse l’Etang
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Anse l’Etang has no beach bars or hotel on the sand, and the small restaurant above the bay is among the few places you can sit down nearby. It lies on the north coast of Saint Barthélemy, on the Gustavia side of Anse de Grand Cul-de-Sac and Lorient, a short ride from the capital. The bay is a small crescent of pale sand held between two green headlands, with water that is calm, clear and usually flat enough for easy swimming. Snorkeling is decent near the rocks at each end. Surf is rare. Crowds stay thin, though nearby villas are among the island’s priciest, and that shows in every menu. Budget travelers should bring food and water. Parking is limited, so arrive early.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #99 beach in Saint Barthélemy
Why visitors keep coming back

Anse l’Etang beach earns a stop because it sits right beside the luxury tier of the island yet charges nothing for the sand. A short hike or ride from Gustavia, it gives you a calm bay with no sunbed rows or jet skis, which is rare on an island where many beaches fill by midday. The water is shallow near shore and sheltered by the headlands, so it suits an easy first swim after the flight or ferry. It also works as a pause between town errands and the longer coastal drives toward Lorient and Saline. Watching the villas on the hillsides above, with Gustavia only minutes away, gives you a lesson in how the island is divided between its wealthy residents and its public shoreline. Pack your own lunch, because the spendy options are close but the sand stays free.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Anse l’Etang

  1. The crescent of sand: the main draw is the curved bay itself, pale and fine, with a gentle slope into turquoise water. It stays quiet, so you can claim a patch under the sea grape trees without effort.
  2. Swimming in the sheltered cove: the headlands block most swell, so the water is usually calm and clear, good for slow laps or floating with kids.
  3. Snorkeling along the rocky edges: bring your own mask and fins and work along the rocks at either end, where small reef fish gather near the stones.
  4. Sunset from the shore: the bay faces the open sea, and the horizon lights up while the villas on the slopes go quiet. There is no nightlife here, so this is the evening activity.
  5. The hillside viewpoints above the bay: the road wraps around the headlands and gives an elevated look at the whole crescent and

Anse l’Etang beach needs no ticket or booking for any of this, since the sand and water are open to everyone.

Gustavia, the harbor town about 10 minutes by road, has the island’s widest choice of cheaper guesthouses and studios, usually €120 to 200 a night in low season and more in winter. It also has supermarkets, so you can self-cater and cut costs sharply. Gustavia suits solo travelers best because you can meet other backpackers and crew from the marina bars.
Saint-Jean, roughly 15 minutes away, offers small apartments and a livelier beach crowd, with eateries and a short walk to the sand.
Lorient is quieter and more local, with simple rentals and a village bakery. Staying directly above Anse l’Etang means villa prices (often €400 and up), so most backpackers sleep elsewhere and visit by scooter or rental car.

🛡️ SafetyTraveler Safety Guide

Anse l’Etang beach is calm, well-regarded, and low-risk for most visitors. It faces north and is open to Atlantic swell, so the water can turn choppy from winter into spring, with shore break near the sand. Check conditions before wading in, and stay off the rocks at the edges when waves build. Currents are mild on quiet days, though they can pull sideways on rougher ones. Few lifeguards patrol the island’s beaches, so judge conditions yourself and swim where others do. Sea urchins sit on the rocky margins, and the occasional jellyfish appears, so reef shoes help. The sun is intense at midday, and shade is limited, so bring a hat, water, and reef-safe sunscreen. Petty theft from parked rental cars happens on the island, so keep valuables out of sight and take only what you need to the sand.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Reaching Anse l’Etang beach takes about 10 to 15 minutes by road from Gustavia, and it lies on the north coast near Lorient. Most travelers rent a car or scooter, with small cars around €50 to 90 a day. Taxis from Gustavia cost roughly €25 to 40 one way, and the island has no real public bus network. Flights land at Gustav III Airport, about 10 minutes away.
Anse l’Etang beach is decent for swimming on calm days, with clear water and a sandy bottom, but the north-facing cove can get rough in winter swells. Surfing is better at nearby Lorient, where bodyboarders and surfers go when swell arrives, and Toiny on the south side is for experts only. Snorkeling is possible along the rocky edges when seas are flat, though better reef spots are at Colombier and Shell Beach. Rental snorkel gear costs around €10 to 20 a day on the island.
Anse l’Etang beach is free to visit, with no entrance fee or permit needed to use the sand. Parking nearby is generally free, though space is limited, so arrive before late morning in high season. The beach has a small beachfront restaurant where lunch commonly runs €30 to 60 a person. Bringing your own snacks and water from a Gustavia or Lorient supermarket keeps costs down.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.
