Backpacking in Bequia Easter Regatta
👌 Worth visitingfestival ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The Bequia Easter Regatta mixes local boat classes with visiting racing yachts, and the island’s boat-building shows on land too, in the model boat workshops along the Admiralty Bay waterfront in Port Elizabeth. The festival takes place on Bequia, the second-largest of the Grenadines, south of the main island of Saint Vincent in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, over the four-day Easter weekend. Expect sailing races, calypso, steel pan, beach parties and a mostly Caribbean crowd mixed with yachties. Book beds months ahead, since rooms vanish and prices jump. Bring small bills for food stalls and carry cash to avoid ATM queues. Check the ferry timetable early, because boats fill and last sailings leave on schedule. Unlike the Carriacou Regatta, which centers on a quieter Carriacou festival in August, Bequia’s is a spring weekend with a larger yacht fleet and louder harbor nights.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #4 festival in St. Vincent & the Grenadines
The unique appeal for travelers

Bequia Easter Regatta pulls backpackers because it concentrates the island’s sailing culture into one weekend, and you can join it without owning a boat. Locals race double-ender fishing boats and the Bequia whaleboat tradition is visible in hull shapes, sails and crews who treat the course as serious business. The social side matters too. Hostel dorms and guesthouses are scarce, so you end up sharing tables, taxis and rum punch with strangers who become a temporary crew by Sunday. It suits a longer Caribbean loop. Many travelers slot it between island-hopping in the Grenadines, then continue to Mustique, Union Island or back to the mainland. Compared with big-name Caribbean carnivals, this one feels intimate, with the whole waterfront walkable and no big-ticket entry fee for most events. … read more 👉

Port Elizabeth is the best base for backpackers, since the races, the ferry dock and the evening crowds are all within a short walk of Admiralty Bay. You can leave the late-night noise on your own feet and sleep without needing a taxi. The waterfront road is lit and busy, and solo travelers meet people easily at the bars, cafes and boat-watching spots along it.

Lower Bay, a short walk or cheap taxi ride south along the beach, is quieter and has a relaxed, social feel. It suits people who want a swim before the day starts and a calmer night, with simple guesthouses and beachfront cafes nearby. The sand is wide, and the walk back is straightforward by day.
If the main harbor is full, Friendship Bay on the southern side is another option. It is calmer, with sea views and a more local pace, but you will rely on taxis or shared vans to reach the races and parties. Book transport back before dark.
Avoid isolated hillside spots that need long walks at night. Staying close to the harbor keeps you near the action and makes meeting other travelers simple.

The regatta is a seafood festival as much as a sailing one. Along the Port Elizabeth waterfront you will find grilled fish, lobster in season, fried chicken, roti and rice with peas served from stalls and beach shacks. Smoke from the grills drifts across the harbor all weekend.
The best thing to try is fresh-caught fish with local sides such as breadfruit, plantain or macaroni pie. Pair it with a cold Hairoun beer, the local lager, or a rum punch made with Caribbean rum. Fresh juices and coconut water are easy to find when the sun gets strong.
Portions are generous, so splitting a plate with a new friend works well. Lines are longest at lunch on race days, so eat early or late. Take cash, since small stalls rarely take cards and ATMs can run low over the weekend. Prices are usually quoted in … read more 👉
