Bass from a truck-mounted speaker rattles your ribs before dawn while a stranger smears blue paint down your arm, and nobody has asked if you’re awake yet. That’s J’ouvert, and it’s the moment Vincy Mas stops being a schedule and starts being a street. The festival fills Kingstown, in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’s capital on the island’s southwest coast, from late June into early July. It runs about two weeks. Expect soca, calypso and steel pan, with costumed Mas bands, pageants and fetes mixed in. The crowd is mostly Vincentians, plus family flying in from the UK, Canada and the US, and a thin layer of regional soca chasers. It’s smaller and friendlier than Trinidad’s Carnival, and easier to join. Go for a real local party you can reach on foot. Skip it if you need quiet nights. For a first day, sleep in, find a rum shop near Victoria Park for lunch, walk the Carnival Village in the evening, and save your energy for the pre-dawn start.

Kingstown and the nearby south coast are the best places for backpackers to stay during Vincy Mas, because the parades, fetes and Victoria Park events are all within a short ride.

Staying in Kingstown itself puts you in the middle of the action. You can walk to the parade route, the markets and the bus terminals, and you will meet other travelers and Vincentians in the street.
