Backpacking in Chiesanuova
👌 Worth visitingvillage ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 16, 2026

Years ago, Chiesanuova felt like a place time forgot: a few stone houses, church bells echoing over terraced fields, old men arguing softly in dialect while the air smelled of woodsmoke and cut grass. Today it’s still slow and rural, but the edges are neater, more cars on the road, and hikers with trekking poles share the lanes with tractors. You’re in the western corner of San Marino here, pressed up against the Italian border, far from the postcard cliffs of the capital. For backpackers, Chiesanuova is a pause button: rolling hills, farm tracks, long views toward the Apennines, and not much else. That’s the charm and the drawback. Evenings are quiet, more TV glow behind curtains than bar chatter, and meeting other travelers is hit-or-miss. Compared to Borgo Maggiore or the City of San Marino, it’s sleepier, more local, and better for walkers than sightseers.

  • Weather: Spring and early autumn bring mild, dry days perfect for wandering Chiesanuova’s stone streets without the summer scorch. Summers can hit 30°C (86°F), turning the narrow alleys into a sun trap, while winters dip to around 3°C (37°F), often damp and gray.
  • Temperature: Aim for April to June or September to October when daytime temps hover between 15-25°C (59-77°F). This range keeps your pack light and your pace steady, avoiding the sweat of midsummer or the chill of winter.

  • Seasonal Activities: Autumn hosts local harvest festivals with fresh truffles and chestnuts, a sensory treat that summer misses. Spring’s wildflowers and buzzing bees add a subtle soundtrack to your hikes.
  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and dining costs spike in July and August. Traveling just before or after summer saves money and grants access to the same sights without the premium.
Pro-tip: Plan your visit for late April or early October to catch crisp air, soft light, and empty streets—Chiesanuova at its most authentic, before the crowds and heat roll in.

Chiesanuova is a small village tucked into San Marino’s rugged hills, where options for backpackers are limited but thoughtfully simple. The key here is to embrace the slow pace and the quiet charm rather than hunt for flashy hostels or hotels. Your best bet is to look for agriturismos or family-run guesthouses just outside the village center. These places often offer a room with a view of the rolling hills, where mornings start with the scent of fresh bread and the distant hum of farm life. These places often offer a room with a view of the rolling hills, where mornings start with the scent of fresh bread and the distant hum of farm life. It’s not about luxury; it’s about grounding yourself in the local rhythm.

Why avoid the few scattered hotels in the village? They tend to be pricier and less personal, missing the warmth that makes San Marino’s countryside feel like a home away from home. Instead, booking a spot at an agriturismo means you get a kitchen to cook your own meals, a chance to chat with locals over homemade wine, and a quiet spot to recharge after hiking the nearby trails.

If you want a smoother experience, plan your arrival around daylight. The narrow roads leading into Chiesanuova twist through dense woods and stone walls, and arriving in the dark can feel like stumbling into a maze. Daylight lets you soak in the golden afternoon light filtering through olive trees, making the walk from your lodging to the village square a small adventure in itself.
