Backpacking in Raydah Escarpment Reserve
👍 Recommendednational park ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people only realize after they leave that Raydah Escarpment Reserve is one of the few places in Saudi where you can get cool, misty mountain air and real shade in the middle of a trip that’s otherwise hot and exposed. Tucked just below Abha in the Asir region of southwest Saudi Arabia, it’s a compact, steep reserve with serious elevation drop, dense juniper and acacia, and good chances of spotting birds and baboons. Trails are more like rough shepherd paths than marked routes, so hiking is rewarding but demanding, and access usually needs a 4x4 or a pre-arranged driver. Entry rules and fees can feel inconsistent, camping is restricted, and budget beds are mostly back in Abha. Compared with the broader Asir National Park, Raydah is smaller, wilder, less developed, and better for quiet, focused hiking than casual sightseeing.

Pro-tip: Visit in late autumn or early spring to dodge the worst heat and crowds, maximizing your energy for the trails and your budget for experiences that truly count.
