Backpacking in Sierra Leone International Film
🏆 Top pickfestival ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The Sierra Leone International Film Festival is a small, community-scale event rather than a red-carpet spectacle, and screenings are free or low-cost for locals. It takes place in Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital on the Atlantic coast, with venues spread across the city. Expect African and diaspora films, shorts and documentaries, plus panels and workshops that draw filmmakers, students, journalists and curious residents. The mood is warm and talkative, with people lingering after each screening to argue about what they just saw. Freetown itself does the rest: motorbike taxis whining uphill, damp heat on your neck, charcoal smoke from roadside grills, generators humming when the power drops mid-film. That is part of the experience, and it gives you a real look at a city telling its own stories. A first day could mean a late breakfast, a walk to a daytime screening with a bottle of cold water, then an evening session followed by grilled fish and a long chat with strangers.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #2 festival in Sierra Leone
Why Sierra Leone International Film should be on your travel list

Sierra Leone International Film Festival gives backpackers a rare door into Freetown’s creative life, and that is the main reason to schedule around it. Most visitors to the country come for beaches and hikes. Here you sit in a room with local filmmakers, students and critics, and the conversation after a screening is often better than the film. Because the audience is mostly Sierra Leonean, you meet people on equal footing, not across a tour-desk counter. The festival also gives a loose structure to a stay in a city that can feel hard to read. Mornings can go to a screening or workshop, afternoons to the beaches at Lumley or River Number Two, evenings back at the venues. Compared with big-name festivals elsewhere in Africa, it is intimate and inexpensive, and you can talk directly with directors. … read more 👉

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while celebrating the Sierra Leone International Film

  1. Opening Night Screening: The festival’s centerpiece gathers filmmakers, officials and locals in one hall, with speeches, applause and a film that sets the tone. It is the best place to feel how much the event means to the city.
  2. Sierra Leonean Short Films: Local shorts and documentaries show Freetown life, memory and humor from the inside. Hearing the audience laugh or go quiet in the same places teaches you more than any guidebook.
  3. Filmmaker Q&A Sessions: Directors and producers stay after screenings to answer questions, and the room is small enough that you can ask your own. These conversations are often frank about funding, power cuts and making films with little.
  4. Workshops and Panels: Training sessions for young filmmakers cover writing, camerawork and distribution. Sitting in gives you

  5. Outdoor and Community Screenings: When films move out of formal halls, neighbors bring plastic chairs, kids crowd the front and vendors sell snacks nearby. The sound drifts into the street and the night air does the rest.
Start with the Opening Night Screening, since it puts you in the same room as everyone you will keep meeting at the other events.

🌤️ When to go?When is the celebration of Sierra Leone International Film Festival?

Sierra Leone International Film Festival runs for several days in Freetown, usually in the final months of the year, and organizers set the exact dates annually.
  • Best day: Go for the opening night, when filmmakers, actors and local fans fill the screening spaces and the Q&As feel lively. Weekday daytime slots are calmer and easier for seats.
  • Weather: Expect 23 to 31°C (73 to 88°F), humid air, little rain and about twelve hours of daylight. Bring a light rain shell, sunscreen, a hat and a sweater for chilly screening rooms.
  • Booking: Reserve a bed three to four weeks ahead, since Freetown has limited quality rooms. Prices in the beach districts can climb 20 to 40 percent while the festival is on. Passes are usually bought close to the date or at the door.
  • Getting around: Traffic jams the peninsula

  • Getting around: Traffic jams the peninsula roads by late afternoon, so arrive in Freetown a day early and leave at midday after the closing night, not straight after the final screening.
Book your return transfer to Lungi airport before you arrive, because that leg sells out fastest.

🛏️ Where to stay?Choosing the right base

Aberdeen and Lumley, the beach districts on Freetown’s western side, are the best bases for backpackers heading to the festival.
Both have a cluster of guesthouses, beach bars and restaurants within walking distance of one another, which makes it easy to meet other travelers, filmmakers and volunteers over an evening beer. Streets are lit and busy until late, and the main road gives you plenty of shared taxis and minibuses toward the center. Walking after dark is still best done in a group on the quieter side lanes.

Central Freetown, around the Cotton Tree and the Siaka Stevens Street area, puts you closest to many screenings and the markets. It is loud, crowded and hot, with traffic from early morning, and fewer social spaces for backpackers. It suits you if you want to walk to the venues and don’t mind noise.
Hill Station and the slopes above the city are quieter, greener and cooler, with more private rooms than shared dorms. They work if you want a calm night after long festival days, but you will need a taxi to get down.
Murray Town and Wilberforce sit between the two worlds, with lower prices and decent local eateries. Choose Aberdeen or Lumley first, and book early.

🍲 FoodLocal Cuisine & Drinks

Expect your festival meals to come from street grills, beach shacks and cafés around the screening spaces in Freetown, not from a dedicated food court.
The dish to chase is cassava leaf stew over rice, slow-cooked with palm oil and fish or meat until it turns deep green and almost silky. Groundnut stew and jollof rice are the other staples. Between screenings, buy grilled fish or chicken with spicy pepper sauce, fried plantain and roasted corn from vendors, usually US$1 to 3 per snack. A full plate at a local eatery runs US$2 to 5.
For drinks, local Star beer is the default after a late film, and you will also find ginger beer, fruit juices and bottled water everywhere. Palm wine turns up at casual gatherings; try a small cup first, as it is sweet but stronger than it tastes.

Pay in cash in leones. Cards are rare outside upscale spots, so carry small notes, as vendors often cannot break big ones. Portions are generous and sharing a plate is normal among groups. Lines are informal, so politely say you are next. Hand over food with your right hand and expect cheerful chat while you wait.

Sierra Leone International Film Festival rewards people who stay for the conversation after the credits. Most first-timers rush out to eat, but the real connections happen in the lobby and on the steps, where directors answer questions informally. Bring a small flashlight for walking home after dark, carry cash for snacks, and let someone invite you to the next screening.
