Backpacking in Tanjong Beach
🌟 Highlightbeach ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Tanjong Beach’s big plot twist: for all the online talk about it being “secluded,” you’re still a few meters from oil tankers cruising past like slow-moving apartment blocks. It sits on the southern edge of Sentosa Island, at the far end from Siloso and Palawan, and feels like Singapore’s curated attempt at a chill, semi-private cove. For backpackers, it’s clean, calm, and perfectly swimmable, but the water is more “warm hotel pool” than wild ocean. No surf, zero real snorkel value, and the sand is imported perfection. The vibe swings between sleepy weekday hammock energy and weekend party beach when Tanjong Beach Club fills with people who spent more on one bottle than you did on your hostel. It’s easy to reach by Sentosa bus or on foot, but food and drinks are pricey; cheaper eats and beds are back on the mainland. Compared with busier Siloso and family-heavy Palawan, Tanjong is the most relaxing—but also the least “authentically” coastal.

Ranked #4 beach in Singapore
Reasons people choose to visit here

Tanjong Beach in Singapore is one of those spots that makes you wonder why you even bothered with the rest of the city. First off, the laid-back atmosphere is a breath of fresh air. You can swap the hustle of Orchard Road for a hammock and a cold drink without breaking the bank.

Speaking of affordability, this beach is a rare find in a city where a cup of coffee can cost more than a small car in some countries. Grab a bite from a nearby hawker stall, and you’re set for the day.

The social scene here is another draw. You’ll find a mix of locals and travelers, all vibing together. Whether you’re playing beach volleyball or just people-watching, it’s a great way to connect.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while visiting Tanjong Beach

  • Sunset and ship-silhouette watching — Tanjong’s low, open western horizon means you get wide, unobstructed sunsets and the oddly satisfying sight of container ships sliding past the orange sky. It feels quieter and more intimate than other Sentosa spots, perfect for a slow evening with a cheap snack and a great photo. (Personal favorite.)
  • Calm swimming and stand-up paddleboarding — The bay here is sheltered and shallower than the busier beaches, so the water stays relatively calm. That makes it ideal for easy swims, learning to SUP, or padding out for a skyline-and-sea view without getting tossed around.
  • Feet-in-sand dining and chill beach vibes — You’ll find places that put tables right on the sand and run low-key music at sunset; it’s less about flashy nightlife and more about relaxed

  • Seasonal sunset sessions and intimate night gatherings — Not a full-on club scene, but Tanjong has a history of small-scale sunset DJ sets and beach parties that kick off as daylight fades. They’re boutique, social, and more about hanging out on the sand than anything wild — worth checking if you like mellow evening energy.
  • Coastal strolls and short nature pockets — The stretch around Tanjong links into quieter paths and little headlands, so you can go for a peaceful morning walk, do a mini coastal trek, or watch seabirds and city lights collide. It’s a neat contrast: a tiny nature escape that’s still minutes from Sentosa’s busier attractions.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities - The beach hosts occasional events like beach clean-ups and small festivals mostly in drier months (February to April), adding a local flavor if you time it right.
  • Topic: Price Fluctuations - Accommodation and flights spike during the year-end holidays and Chinese New Year. Visiting outside these peaks means better deals and less frantic travel logistics.
Pro-tip: Hit Tanjong Beach on a weekday morning between February and April for the sweet spot of dry weather, manageable crowds, and a chance to stumble into local events without the holiday price tag.

Tanjong Beach in Singapore is a slice of paradise, but finding the right spot to crash can feel like a scavenger hunt. Here’s the lowdown on where to lay your head without breaking the bank.

You’ll find hostels that are social hubs, perfect for swapping stories over a cold drink after a day in the sun. Plus, you’re just a hop, skip, and a jump from the beach.

Next, consider the nearby HarbourFront area. It’s not just a gateway to Sentosa; it’s also packed with affordable options. You’ll be close to the ferry terminal, making day trips to nearby islands a breeze. The local food scene here is a treat, so you can fuel up without emptying your wallet.

Finally, don’t overlook the East Coast area. It’s a bit further from Tanjong, but the laid-back atmosphere and beach access make it worth it. You’ll find a mix of locals and travelers, creating a friendly vibe that’s hard to resist.

Stay smart, stay social, and enjoy the grind!

🛡️ SafetySafety Tips and Common Scams in Tanjong Beach

Tanjong Beach is generally a safe haven for backpackers, but a few realities keep it grounded. The swimming conditions are usually calm, with gentle waves that won’t have you wrestling with Mother Nature. Currents are minimal, but always check for flags—red means “maybe don’t swim today,” while green says, “go for it.”

Watch out for the sun; it’s relentless. Midday rays can turn you into a lobster faster than you can say “sunscreen.” Locals tend to swim in the early morning or late afternoon, so join them for a more relaxed vibe.

As for marine life, jellyfish occasionally pop up, but they’re not the stuff of nightmares. Just keep an eye out. Theft isn’t rampant, but don’t leave your bag unattended while you frolic in the surf. Enjoy the beach, but stay aware; it’s all part of the adventure.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Tanjong Beach is a slice of chill amidst Singapore’s urban chaos. The soft sand and gentle waves make it a perfect spot to unwind, especially with a cold drink in hand. But let’s be real: it can get crowded, especially on weekends. You might find yourself dodging beach balls and selfie sticks. Still, if you can embrace the chaos, the vibe is worth it. Just don’t forget your sunscreen—trust me on that one.
