Backpacking in Cole Bay to Indigo Bay
👍 Recommendedhike ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Indigo Bay is the kind of beach where you may share the sand with nobody but a few goats and hermit crab trails, and that is the whole point. The hike runs in the south of Sint Maarten, dropping from the hillside streets above Cole Bay down to a small, rarely visited cove between Cay Bay and Little Bay. Expect a short, steep, sun-baked walk of roughly an hour each way, with dry scrub, loose stones and big views over the Caribbean. Good shoes matter more than fitness. Shade is thin, so start early and carry more water than feels sensible. Getting to the top of Cole Bay by local bus from Philipsburg is easy, though the beach itself has no services at all. For a first day, walk down in the cool morning, swim, eat what you packed, and climb back before the afternoon heat sets in.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #4 hike in Sint Maarten
What sets this place apart

Cole Bay to Indigo Bay gives you a proper empty beach for about two hours of walking, which on an island packed with resort sand is a rare deal. You start on a local bus line and finish with your feet in water that few visitors ever see. That contrast is the draw: a hillside descent from Cole Bay that ends at a cove with almost no footprints. It is also cheap, because there are no tickets, guides or gates. Bring your own food and water and the cost is close to nothing. The hike fits easily into a longer stay in Sint Maarten, either as a quiet half-day between beach towns or as a sunrise-style early outing before you head to the lively waterfront bars. It suits anyone who wants a little effort and a payoff of solitude. If you like walking somewhere without a crowd at the end, this is the one on the south coast.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while hiking the Cole Bay to Indigo Bay

  1. Indigo Bay Beach: The destination itself is a small, quiet cove on the south coast, with pale sand, rocks at the edges and almost no other people. Swim carefully and check the surf first.
  2. Cole Bay hillside viewpoints: Early in the descent the slope opens up and you look across the water and down the coast. It is the best spot for photos and a breather.
  3. The dry scrub slopes: Cactus, thorny acacia and low brush line the path, and in the morning you may spot lizards and small birds darting between them.
  4. Coastal rocks between Cay Bay and Little Bay: The shoreline near Indigo Bay is rugged and wave-cut. It is a good place to watch the swell break and to look for hermit crabs along the tide line.
  5. The quiet shoreline stretch: Walk the length of the cove and you will find driftwood, shells and sea glass.

Start with Indigo Bay Beach, because arriving early gives you the cove to yourself before the heat builds, and you can save the viewpoints for the climb back.

🛡️ SafetySafety Tips and Common Scams in Cole Bay to Indigo Bay

Cole Bay to Indigo Bay is a short, low-risk hike, and the main hazards are heat and footing. The descent crosses open hillside with little shade, so start early, wear closed shoes with real tread and carry more water than the distance suggests, because there is no place to buy any on the way down. Loose gravel and dry soil get slippery, and after rain the steeper sections turn greasy, so shorten your stride and use your hands where needed. Paths branch near the neighborhoods at the top, so download an offline map before you leave the road. Goats and the occasional stray dog are the wildlife you will meet, and both usually keep their distance. Indigo Bay has no lifeguard and the surf can pick up on the south coast, so swim only on calm days. Leave nothing valuable visible in a parked car, and pack out all your trash.

FAQFrequently asked questions about Cole Bay to Indigo Bay

Cole Bay to Indigo Bay takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour one way, and roughly 1.5 to 2 hours for a round trip with time on the sand. The descent from the Cole Bay neighborhoods is quicker than the climb back up. Most people do it as a half-morning outing, finishing before the midday heat.
Cole Bay to Indigo Bay is easy to moderate, mainly because of its steep, loose-surfaced slope rather than its length. The descent is short, but the return climb in tropical heat, typically 28 to 31°C (82 to 88°F), tires first-timers. Sturdy shoes and a good supply of water make it comfortable for most fit hikers.
Cole Bay to Indigo Bay needs neither a guide nor a permit, and there is no fee to walk it or to use the beach. The route is short and easy to follow with an offline map. A local guide is optional and would cost roughly US$40 to 80 if you want one for a wider island walk.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Cole Bay to Indigo Bay looks like a quick stroll on a map, but the climb out is what catches first-timers, because the slope faces the sun for most of the afternoon. I would go down early, swim, and leave before midday. Bring a hat, a full bottle of water and a bag for your trash, since nothing waits at the bottom.
