Backpacking in Heineken Regatta
👍 Recommendedfestival ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Heineken Regatta is a sailing event first and a party second, and the racing happens on the water off Simpson Bay, not at a stadium or a single venue. It takes place in the southwest of Sint Maarten, around the Sint Maarten Yacht Club, Simpson Bay Lagoon and the Princess Juliana airport area. Expect keen sailors, yacht crews, and a lively crowd of Caribbean regulars and travelers drawn by reggae, soca and DJ sets that run late. Book beds early, because rooms around Simpson Bay and Maho sell out months ahead and prices jump, so look at Philipsburg or Cole Bay for cheaper options. Rental cars vanish too, so reserve one early or use taxis and buses. Bring cash for small bars. Rain showers pass quickly, so pack a light shell. For a first day, grab a coffee in Simpson Bay, walk the waterfront to watch crews prep their boats, then settle at a beach bar for the sunset party.

Why visitors keep coming back

Heineken Regatta draws backpackers because it turns a small island into a floating meeting point for sailors from across the Caribbean, and that is where the real opportunity sits. Boats need crew, and the crew-hunting scene around Simpson Bay lets you chat with captains at the docks and bars, which can lead to a berth on a race day or onward passage to another island. Many travelers have found their next leg this way.

The second pull is the atmosphere. Four days of racing finish with free nightly parties at the Regatta Village at Port de Plaisance and nearby beach bars, so you meet strangers fast and share tables with people who actually know the water. Everyone is swapping stories, which makes it easy to join in solo.

Everyone is swapping stories, which makes it easy to join in solo.

It also fits neatly into a longer island-hopping loop. Sint Maarten has a busy airport, and ferries run to Anguilla, Saint Barth and Saba, so you can pair the event with several other islands. Because the event sits on the French and Dutch sides, you can eat well on both and explore beyond the racing.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  1. The Racing off Simpson Bay: The main event is the fleet of racing yachts, from big maxis to small multihulls, crossing the start lines in the bay and rounding marks within sight of the coast. Watching from the shore or a spectator boat gives you the best sense of the sport and the island together.
  2. Sint Maarten Yacht Club: The organizing club beside the Simpson Bay Bridge is the social heart of the regatta, where sailors gather after each race to compare notes. It is the best spot to hear race stories and meet the crews who make the event what it is.
  3. Crew Hunting on the Docks: Walking the marinas around Simpson Bay Lagoon, you can talk to captains and offer to join a crew. Some boats take guests for a day of racing, and it is the most direct way to experience the sport rather than watch it.

  4. Beach Bar Parties at Simpson Bay and Maho: Evening parties spill from the waterfront bars with live reggae, soca and DJs. They are loud, social and easy to join, with sailors and locals mixed together on the sand.
  5. Watching Planes Over Maho Beach: Princess Juliana airport sits next to the regatta area, and jets pass low over Maho Beach. It is a famous sight, and it fits easily between race days, so it is a fun break from the water.
Heineken Regatta racing is free to watch from the shore, but a spectator boat trip or a place on a racing yacht needs to be booked well ahead.

🌤️ When to go?When is the celebration of Heineken Regatta?

Heineken Regatta runs for four days in early March (usually Thursday to Sunday, with the dates set around the first weekend of the month), with racing out of Simpson Bay and the party base at Simpson Bay Lagoon and Great Bay on Sint Maarten.
  • Best day: Saturday and Sunday have the biggest fleets and the loudest shoreside parties, while Thursday and Friday are calmer and easier for finding a bar stool.
  • Weather: Expect dry, breezy days of 27 to 29°C (81 to 84°F) with steady trade winds and only a passing shower. Pack a hat, reef-safe sunscreen, a light rain shell and a dry bag for boat rides.
  • Booking: Reserve beds 3 to 5 months ahead. Rates often climb 30 to 60 percent for regatta week, and the cheapest rooms vanish first.
  • Crowds: Roads around Simpson Bay and the airport clog on Friday and Saturday

Walk the shoreline at dawn on race days, when the boats leave the bay and the crowds have not formed yet.

🍲 FoodLocal Cuisine & Drinks

Food at Heineken Regatta runs on the island’s grill culture. Around Simpson Bay and the lagoon-side bars, barbecue ribs, grilled chicken and johnny cakes (fried dough, split and stuffed with saltfish or cheese) come off oil-drum grills and out of beach-bar kitchens. Expect plates at roughly US$10 to 20 and snack portions at US$4 to 8.

For something authentic, go for stewed saltfish, conch in butter garlic sauce, callaloo soup and fried plantain. Order guavaberry, the island’s rum-based folk liqueur, as a shot or in a punch. Local rum punch comes in plastic cups for about US$6 to 10, and the beer of the weekend is, naturally, Heineken, usually US$3 to 5 a bottle at stalls and bars, more at sponsor tents.

The quirks are simple. Cash in US dollars is accepted nearly everywhere and is faster than cards at busy stalls, so carry small bills, since change runs short in the afternoon crush. Lines at grill stands move slowly because everything is cooked to order, and the best ones are the ones with locals waiting. Portions are big, so sharing a rib plate with a hostel mate is normal. Drinks get pricier and queues longer once the afternoon boat parties return, so eat early, then settle in at the dock for the evening.

FAQTraveler FAQ

Heineken Regatta takes place in early March, usually over four days from Thursday to Sunday, with the main racing days on Friday and Saturday. Racing is based around Simpson Bay and the lagoon on the Dutch side of Sint Maarten. Parties at Simpson Bay and Philipsburg continue into the evenings, so plan to arrive by the Wednesday before.
Spectating costs nothing, as the races are watched from beaches, docks and bars around Simpson Bay. Most backpackers spend about US$150 to 355 a day at Heineken Regatta, once a high-season bed (US$90 to 200) and food and drinks (US$40 to 70) are counted. Entry to official parties and events is typically US$10 to 25, and transport adds US$10 to 30 a day.
Tickets are not needed to watch Heineken Regatta from shore, and you can walk up to most beaches and bars for free. Some official parties and events sell entry, often US$10 to 25, which you can buy at the door or in advance for the busiest nights. The real advance booking is your bed, which should be reserved a few months ahead because Simpson Bay rooms sell out around the first week of March.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Heineken Regatta suits social travelers who like boats, music and talking to strangers, and sailors looking for crew or a lift to the next island. Skip it if you want a quiet beach week. I would book a bed months ahead, bring cash, and spend at least one day on the water rather than the bar.
