- Mas bands and costume launches — Buying into a band and parading in a themed costume is a local rite of passage. The launches are mini-productions—DJ sets, model shows of the costume lines—and the actual mas is deeply participatory: you dance with a crew instead of just watching.
- Beach fetes, food stalls and the island mash-up vibe — Parties spill onto beaches, and the parade route is lined with vendors selling BBQ, seafood, Johnny cakes and other local bites. Sint Maarten’s Dutch/French/Caribbean mix gives the whole festival a friendly, multilingual, small-island feel you don’t get at bigger carnivals.
