- Stužica Primeval Beech Forest (UNESCO) — one of the best-preserved stands of ancient beech in Europe. Walk among giant, gnarly beeches and feel how untouched forest structure supports mosses, fungi and a crazy variety of life you don’t see in younger woods.
- Havešová Nature Reserve — another chunk of primeval beech forest that feels genuinely old and quiet. Good for easy-to-moderate hikes, close views of veteran trees and a real sense of what Carpathian forest looked like before logging.
- Poloniny meadows and ridges — the “poloniny” are open high meadows that give the park its name and its look: long grassy ridges with big skies. Great in summer for wildflowers, butterflies and long ridge walks with panoramic views into Poland and Ukraine.

- Starina Reservoir and wetlands — a large, quiet waterbody surrounded by bogs and swamp forest that support rare plants and birds. Access around the reservoir is limited because it’s a water source, but there are lookout points and nearby trails worth planning into your route.
- Big carnivores and rich birdlife — Poloniny still hosts brown bears, wolves and lynx, plus black storks, woodpeckers and capercaillie. You probably won’t see a bear on a day hike, but you’ll notice tracks, droppings and the soundscape of an intact ecosystem.
- Dark skies and real solitude — one of Slovakia’s least developed parks, so night skies are dark and trails are quiet. If you want big, unhurried nature and clean air for stargazing or long, reflective walks, this is it.
