Backpacking in Kamnik
👍 Recommendedtown ranked #10
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 16, 2026

Kamnik is not for anyone chasing big-city nightlife, hostel bar crawls, or a packed checklist of museums. It’s for when you want Slovenia to slow down a little. The town sits in central Slovenia, just northeast of Ljubljana, with the Kamnik-Savinja Alps rising like a stone wall behind the red roofs. As a backpacker, you use Kamnik more as a base than a headline act: quiet cobbled streets, a compact old center, and easy access to Velika Planina and nearby trails. Trains and buses from Ljubljana make it simple, and you can walk almost everything once you’re there. Evenings are café-slow, not party-loud, so meeting other travelers depends on the season and whether a small hostel or guesthouse crowd happens to be in town. It’s cheaper and calmer than Ljubljana, more lived-in than postcard-perfect Bled, and feels safe enough that walking back from a late beer is more about listening to church bells and river noise than worrying about your backpack.

The trade-off is a bit more noise at night, but that’s the soundtrack of connection, not chaos.

🚌 Getting aroundHow to get from A to B

  • Walking: The heart of Kamnik is compact and best explored on foot. Strolling through the old town, you’ll catch the texture of weathered stone walls and the soft chatter of locals. Walking is free, flexible, and the best way to soak in the atmosphere without missing the small details.
  • Local Bus: Buses run from early morning around 6:00 AM until about 9:00 PM, with tickets costing roughly €1.50 per ride. They connect Kamnik to nearby villages and the train station, but expect a relaxed schedule—buses might not always arrive exactly on time, so plan with a buffer.
  • Train to Ljubljana: The train station is a 15-minute walk from the center. Trains to Ljubljana depart roughly every hour from early morning until late evening, with tickets around €4. The ride is comfortable and scenic, slicing through valleys and forests, making it a budget-friendly way to access the capital without the hassle of traffic.
  • Taxi: Taxis are available but pricier, starting at about €5 for short trips within town. Use them sparingly—perfect for late-night returns or when you’re carrying heavy gear and the hills start to feel steep.

  • Local Transport: Kamnik is compact, so walking covers most needs. For trips to nearby attractions or the mountains, local buses cost about €2 to €4 per ride. Renting a bike is another option, roughly €10 to €15 per day, giving you freedom to explore the scenic outskirts without the hassle of schedules.
  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: Kamnik’s charm is mostly outdoors and free—hiking trails, old town strolls, and nature parks. Entry fees for local museums or cultural sites hover around €3 to €6. If you plan to visit thermal spas or guided tours, budget closer to €15 to €25 for those special experiences.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Think coffee breaks, occasional snacks, or a local beer—these small indulgences add up to about €3 to €7 daily. Wi-Fi is usually free at hostels and cafes, so no extra cost there, but keep a small buffer for unexpected needs like toiletries or a bus ticket upgrade.

All told, a realistic daily budget for backpacking in Kamnik falls between €35 and €60. This range covers the essentials without cutting corners, letting you soak in the town’s quiet charm and alpine backdrop without stress. The key is balancing simple meals and free outdoor activities with occasional splurges on local treats or transport, making every euro feel like a step deeper into the experience.
