Backpacking in Kamniška Bistrica Valley
👌 Worth visitingregion ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people only realize on their last day in Kamniška Bistrica that they’ve basically had a Triglav-level alpine experience for half the price and a fraction of the crowds. Kamniška Bistrica Valley sits at the southern foot of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps in northern Slovenia, just beyond the town of Kamnik and an easy hop from Ljubljana. For backpackers, it’s that sweet spot: wild rivers, steep limestone walls, cable car up to Velika Planina, and legit mountain huts, but without Bled’s tour-bus circus or Logar Valley’s rising prices. Buses thin out fast once you leave Kamnik, so you trade convenience for quiet; hitchhiking is common, timetables are not. It’s more “Slovenian weekend escape” than party hub, which I love: cheap mountain food, older locals in wool socks, and trails where you still say hello to everyone you pass.

Tickets cost about €2-3, making it an affordable way to hop between villages. Expect a scenic ride, but be ready for occasional delays—this is Slovenia, not a Swiss train schedule.
  • Taxi Services: If you’re in a pinch or want to reach a more remote trailhead, taxis are available. Fares start around €10 for short distances. While pricier than buses, they can save you time, especially if you’re traveling in a group. Just be sure to negotiate the fare beforehand to avoid surprises.
  • Bicycle Rentals: A fantastic way to explore the valley at your own pace. Rentals typically cost around €15 per day. You can pick one up in Kamnik and ride along the river paths or venture into the hills. Just remember, the terrain can be challenging, so a decent level of fitness is required.
  • Hiking: This is the ultimate way to experience the valley. Trails are well-marked and free, leading you through stunning landscapes. Just pack enough water and snacks, and you can spend the whole day wandering without spending a dime.

For a tactical tip: consider starting your day early. The morning light casts a magical glow on the valley, and you’ll beat the crowds to the best spots. Plus, you’ll have the added bonus of catching the local bus or bike rental before the rush. Embrace the flow, and let the valley reveal its treasures at your own pace.
