Backpacking in Kostanjevica na Krki
👍 Recommendedvillage ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 16, 2026

Years ago, Kostanjevica na Krki felt like a secret: a sleepy island village where the loudest sound was a chicken across the river and the Krka moved so slowly it looked half-asleep. Today it’s still calm, but you feel more weekend trippers from Ljubljana, more bikes leaning against café walls, a touch more polish along the riverfront. You’re in southeastern Slovenia, in the Dolenjska region, almost hugging the Croatian border. For backpackers, it’s a soft landing spot: river, low hills, vineyards, and a compact island core that you can cross in minutes. The upside is atmosphere and nature access; the downside is limited budget beds and very quiet nights. Evenings mean river light fading, locals strolling, early dinners, then silence. It’s calmer and more scenic than nearby Krško or Novo Mesto, less touristy than Otočec, and better as a slow pause than a social hub.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. Kostanjevica island and old town — The whole village sits on a compact island in the Krka River; narrow streets, old stone houses and a calm, island-town atmosphere make wandering the layout itself the best way to feel the place’s history and rhythm.
  2. Former Cistercian Abbey (Kostanjevica Monastery) — A medieval monastic complex that anchors the town: cloisters, old walls and monastic architecture give a clear sense of the settlement’s role through centuries and host cultural uses today.
  3. Božidar Jakac Gallery (Galerija Božidarja Jakca) — Housed in the monastery buildings, this gallery showcases works by Božidar Jakac and rotating regional exhibitions; it’s the cultural heart of the village and a must for anyone who cares about Slovenian modern art in a historic setting.
  4. Church of the Assumption

  4. Church of the Assumption (parish church adjoining the monastery) — The historic church next to the abbey features notable interior details and funerary monuments; visiting gives context to the town’s religious and artistic heritage and quiet moments for photography or reflection.
  5. Riverside promenade, small bridges and Krka vantage points — Walkable riverbanks, footbridges and vantage spots around the island offer the town’s best views, relaxed picnic spots and immediate access to the Krka’s calm waters and birdlife.
Nearby day trips include Otočec Castle, the regional center Novo Mesto, and the Gorjanci hills — Otočec Castle is my personal favorite.

  • Crowds: Peak summer (July-August) draws local tourists, especially weekends, which can dilute the village’s quiet charm. Shoulder seasons—May-June and September—offer a more intimate vibe with fewer visitors.
  • Seasonal Activities: Spring and autumn bring local festivals and markets, where you can taste fresh produce and homemade crafts. Summer offers river swimming and outdoor concerts, while winter is quieter, focusing on cozy indoor experiences.
  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and dining prices peak in summer. Booking in shoulder seasons often means better rates and more availability, letting you stretch your budget without sacrificing experience.
Pro-tip: Aim for late spring or early autumn—when the light softens, the air smells of blooming or drying herbs, and the village feels like it’s just for you. That’s when Kostanjevica na Krki reveals its true rhythm.

Start with Hostel Kostanjevica, a no-frills spot right near the river. It’s basic but clean, with dorm beds that won’t drain your wallet. The morning light filters through old wooden shutters, and you can hear birds before the village wakes. Staying here means you’re a short walk from the Franciscan monastery and the small galleries that give the village its artistic pulse.

If you want a touch more comfort without losing authenticity, Guesthouse Pri Škofu offers simple rooms with hearty breakfasts. It’s run by a family who knows the village’s history and can point you to the best local bakeries or the quietest spots along the Krka River. The scent of fresh bread and wood smoke in the morning is a subtle reminder you’re somewhere real, not a tourist bubble.

Avoid big hotels in nearby towns if you want to soak in Kostanjevica’s atmosphere. Staying here means waking up to the soft rustle of leaves and the occasional church bell, not traffic noise. That’s the kind of detail that turns a trip into a memory.
