The Land Cruiser lurches to a stop on a hairpin, diesel ticking, and a boy in a Basotho blanket herds three donkeys past my window without a glance. That was my ride up from Underberg, and the dust drifting in smelled of crushed thyme and hot rubber. Sani Pass is a gravel road through the Drakensberg, in the southwest of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, climbing roughly 1,000 meters to the Lesotho border. The drive is short and the views repeat after the third switchback, so skip it if all you want is one photo. Tours are pricey for the distance, and the summit gets busy around midday when the vehicles converge. What justifies the trip is the border crossing into Lesotho, Africa’s highest pub at 2,874 meters, and a village visit up top. Anyone who likes rough roads and big escarpment drops will love it. Travelers who get carsick or want a cheap day out will not.

Sani Pass is one of the few places where you can drive out of South Africa and into another country by climbing a wall. That alone sets it apart from the usual Drakensberg hikes, because you reach the Lesotho plateau in a morning without a multi-day trek.
The 4x4-only gravel road keeps traffic low, and only a handful of operators run it, so you share the mountain with few other groups. Private cars without high clearance are turned back, which keeps the pass raw.

The other option is the top of the pass in Lesotho, where the highest pub in Africa sits at about 2,874 m (9,429 ft). The rondavel-style bunks there are basic and cold at night, but staying up top suits hikers heading into the Drakensberg escarpment. Book ahead in July and school holidays, since beds and tour seats fill fast.
