West Coast National Park is a lagoon-and-fynbos reserve, and the whales and big game people expect from South Africa are not the draw. It sits on the Atlantic coast north of Cape Town, in South Africa. Langebaan Lagoon glows turquoise, and bontebok and eland graze right beside the road. I expected empty beach and found a Postberg flower carpet with ostriches strolling through it. Skip it for serious multi-day hiking; come for short walks, birds and quiet water. Best for easygoing wanderers with a car, dull for thrill-seekers.

🛏️ Where to stay?Where staying makes the most sense

The most convenient base is Langebaan, a lagoon-side town just outside the Langebaan gate, with hostels and guesthouses from about US$18 to 30 for a dorm bed or budget room. Inside the park, the Duinepos chalets and the Churchhaven cottages, reached by boat or on foot, suit groups, and there are a few basic self-catering cottages at Abrahamskraal and Postberg that are popular in flower season. Backpacker beds are limited, so most hikers stay in Langebaan and drive in. Yzerfontein and Saldanha Bay are alternatives with cheaper self-catering, while Cape Town is about 120 kilometers south, a feasible base if you have a rental car.

West Coast National Park is straightforward and well managed, with the main risks being sun, wind and cold fronts. Shade is scarce, so carry at least 2 to 3 liters of water, a hat and sunscreen. Snakes such as puff adders and cape cobras occasionally sun on paths; give them room and wear closed shoes. Eland, zebra and ostrich are used to vehicles but keep your distance. Lock your car at trailheads and carry no visible valuables, as break-ins occasionally happen at parking areas.
