Backpacking in Diyaluma Falls Trek
👍 Recommendedhike ranked #7
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated July 12, 2026

Most people think Diyaluma is a quick roadside photo stop, but the real magic sits on top, not at the base. Diyaluma Falls Trek rises above the Colombo–Badulla road near Koslanda, a short hop from Ella in Sri Lanka’s hill country. The hike itself is short but punchy: dusty farm tracks, scrubby tea, then a final push over hot rock slabs before the sound of water suddenly swallows everything. It’s not a technical trek, but the heat and lack of shade hit harder than the distance. Public buses drop you within tuk-tuk range of the trailhead, so it’s easier to reach than many Sri Lankan hikes, and the payoff—tiered infinity pools right on the cliff edge—beats Ella Rock and Little Adam’s Peak for pure adrenaline-soaked scenery.

The unique appeal for travelers

The Diyaluma Falls Trek is a magnet for backpackers craving a blend of challenge and reward. You start with a pulse of excitement as you navigate the rugged trails, each step bringing you closer to one of Sri Lanka’s tallest waterfalls. The scenery-to-effort ratio is off the charts; you’ll sweat it out on the ascent, but the payoff is a breathtaking cascade plunging into a crystal-clear pool.

Getting there is a breeze. Public transport whisks you from Ella to the trailhead, making it accessible without breaking the bank. The trek itself is flexible; you can tailor the distance to your energy level, whether you’re up for a quick jaunt or a full day of exploration.

  • The Main Plunge (Diyaluma Falls itself) — Sri Lanka’s second-highest waterfall (about 220 m), a thunderous vertical drop you can feel as much as see; the scale and constant mist make it dramatically different from the little cascades you find on other hikes.
  • Natural Rock Pools on the Rim (the “Diyaluma Ladder”) — a string of shallow, natural infinity pools right at the top edge where people cool off and stare straight over the abyss; swimming here with the valley sprawling below is a uniquely thrilling way to experience a waterfall.
  • Rim Viewpoints and Sunrise Vistas — wide, exposed viewpoints along the rim give sweeping panoramas over rolling hills, tea patches and distant plains; early-morning light turns the mist into layers, and that quiet golden hour feels like the whole valley has

  • Diverse Trail Scenery — Rocks, Grasslands and Mini-Cascades — the route isn’t just forest: you walk across rocky slabs, through open grassland and over little step-waterfalls, so the scenery keeps changing and the hike never feels monotonous.
  • Local Villages, Tea Terraces and Wildlife Pockets — small hamlets and tea fields flank parts of the trek, so you’ll catch glimpses of rural life and farm paths; bird and butterfly activity is common around the moist gullies, adding quiet wildlife interest between viewpoints.

  • Seasonal Activities: Post-monsoon months reveal lush greenery and swollen falls, making the final plunge more dramatic. Avoid the dry season when the falls shrink to a trickle.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and guide fees spike slightly in peak months; off-season offers bargains but fewer services.

Pro-tip: Hit the trail just after the monsoon clears—muddy legs, yes, but the roar of Diyaluma Falls at full throttle is worth every slippery step.

We 💚 feedbackSumming up the experience

Diyaluma Falls is a showstopper. The rush of water plunging down the rocks is a sight that’ll stick with you long after the hike. But here’s the kicker: the trail can be slippery and steep, demanding your full attention. It’s not a stroll in the park. Embrace the challenge, though. The reward?
