Backpacking in Meemure Village Trail
👌 Worth visitinghike ranked #10
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people arrive in Kandy thinking Meemure is some wild, multi-day expedition into untouched jungle; it’s not that remote, but it still makes you earn it. The Meemure Village Trail sits deep in the Knuckles Mountain Range in central Sri Lanka, a rough, green bowl of peaks and rice paddies. The hike itself is moderate rather than brutal: a few steep, sweaty climbs, river crossings, leeches in the wet months, and then those big-payoff views of Lakegala rock and terraced fields. Public transport gets you close via buses and a bone-rattling tuk-tuk, but it’s slower and messier than more polished Knuckles hikes like Deanston. Less signage, more guesswork, more character.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #10 hike in Sri Lanka
What sets this place apart

The Meemure Village Trail is a backpacker’s dream, blending effort with reward in a way that feels almost effortless. You’ll find yourself surrounded by lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and the rhythmic sounds of nature. The scenery-to-effort ratio is off the charts; you’ll sweat a bit, but the views from the ridge are jaw-dropping.

Access is a breeze via public transport, making it easy to hop on a bus from Kandy. Plus, it’s a low-cost adventure that won’t break the bank. You can tailor your hike to fit your vibe, whether you want a quick jaunt or a full day of exploration.

This trail seamlessly integrates into a longer backpacking route through Sri Lanka, allowing you to soak in the local culture of Meemure Village. After the trek, nothing beats that first cold beer while you soak in the sunset.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Meemure Village Trail

  1. Meemure Village itself — A living snapshot of rural Sri Lanka: a tiny, almost-isolated settlement where life runs on rice seasons and local stories. Staying or walking through the hamlet gives you real cultural texture — simple homes, friendly villagers, and homestays that feel like crashing with distant relatives rather than a polished tourist setup.
  2. Knuckles ridgeline viewpoints — The jagged spine of the Knuckles Range unfurls from several lookout points on the trail. The angles of light at dawn or late afternoon make the peaks and valleys pop; it’s dramatic, often cloud-wreathed, and far more raw than the tidy lookout platforms on busier hikes.

  3. Terraced paddy fields and mountain agriculture — Farmers have carved the steep slopes into terraces, and the changing colors (mud, neon green sprouts, golden stalks) give the landscape a patchwork quality. It’s a quieter, more authentic agricultural scene than the manicured tea estates elsewhere in Sri Lanka.
  4. Crisp streams and tucked-away pools — Cold, clear mountain streams thread the route, with little waterfalls and natural bathing pools that invite a refresher on a hot day. The water-feel and the sound of running water are part of what makes this trail feel remote and alive.
  5. Montane flora and birdlife — The trail passes patches of cloud-forest-like vegetation and scrub where you’ll spot endemic plants, orchids, and a surprising variety of birds and butterflies. It’s a great place for quiet wildlife moments — not a safari, but you’ll notice species and sounds you won’t hear on lowland hikes.
