Backpacking in Blå Lagunen
👍 Recommendedunique site ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 26, 2026

Everyone shows Blå Lagunen as “Sweden’s Maldives.” It’s not. It’s an old limestone quarry on northern Gotland, near Ar in Fårösund, that happens to have shockingly blue water and a very photogenic shoreline. For backpackers, it’s a fun detour, not a life-altering pilgrimage. The wow-factor is real when you first walk up and see that turquoise bowl in the middle of otherwise flat, wind-beaten island landscape, but you’ll usually share it with families, coolers, and inflatable flamingos. It’s free, easy to reach by bike or bus plus a short walk, and great for a quick swim and high-contrast photos, but there’s zero cultural depth and no real “sense of history” beyond the quarry story. I treat it as a half-day swim stop between Gotland’s medieval Visby and the raw, cinematic coastline further north.

What sets this place apart

Blå Lagunen isn’t just another pretty face in Sweden; it’s a refreshing escape that packs a punch. Sure, it’s popular, and yes, you’ll share the space with other travelers, but that’s part of the vibe. The turquoise waters are like a siren call after a long hike or a day of exploring.

The entry fee is reasonable, especially considering the natural beauty and the chance to soak in mineral-rich waters. It’s not just about the Instagram shots; it’s about the experience of unwinding in a stunning setting.

What makes Blå Lagunen truly special is how it fits into a broader backpacking route. Nestled near Gotland, it’s an easy stop between other adventures, like the historic sites of Visby or the rugged coastlines. So, while it might be a bit crowded, the authenticity and serenity you find in those waters make it worth every moment. Don’t skip it; embrace the buzz and soak it all in.

  • Turquoise water — the colour is the whole show: mineral-rich, bright blue-green water from the old quarry contrasts with pale rock and makes for unreal photos and dreamy swims.
  • Dramatic quarry cliffs — sheer rock faces and ledges give the place a cinematic, almost otherworldly feel. People come for views and (careful) cliff-jumping from lower platforms.
  • Crystal-clear swimming and snorkeling — visibility is usually very good, so snorkelers can see the drop-offs and underwater rock formations; be mindful of sudden depth changes.
  • Sunbathing terraces and little beaches — flat rock slabs and small sandy pockets are perfect for spreading a towel, picnicking, or watching others splash around without a crowded resort vibe.

  • Industrial history and geology on display — it’s a former quarry, so you can actually see the layers of rock and remnants of human activity that made the lagoon what it is; interesting if you like geology or offbeat history.
  • Golden-hour photography — late afternoon light hitting the water and pale cliffs creates incredible reflections and colours; bring a polariser if you care about shots.
  • Local summer hangout culture (bring the basics) — it’s a popular, informal spot for locals in summer: think barbecues, music, sun. There may be no lifeguards, toilets, or rubbish collection, so pack water, a trash bag, and common-sense safety.

  • Temperature: Daytime highs in July and August hover around 20-22°C (68-72°F), perfect for lounging and exploring. Spring and fall are cooler, often dipping below 10°C (50°F), making water activities less appealing.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer is the only real window for swimming, kayaking, and cliff jumping. Spring and fall are better for hiking and birdwatching but skip the water sports unless you’re tough.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs spike in midsummer. Booking early can save you a bundle. Off-season visits are cheaper but come with the trade-off of colder weather and fewer services.

Pro-tip: Aim for late June or early September—warm enough to enjoy the lagoon without the crush, and you’ll snag better deals and a more authentic vibe.

Another option is the nearby archipelago. Staying on one of the islands can be a game-changer. You’ll escape the crowds and soak in the serene beauty. Look for shared cabins or campsites; they’re often cheaper and provide a chance to meet other adventurers. Plus, the sunsets over the water? Worth every penny.

Avoid the tourist traps that inflate prices without adding value. Instead, seek out places where you can truly experience the local culture and connect with nature. That’s where the real magic happens.

  • Extras: If you want to rent a towel or a locker, budget an additional €5 to €10 ($5 to $11). These small costs can add up, so plan accordingly.

Blå Lagunen is a beautiful spot, but the experience can be enhanced by being mindful of these costs.

Blå Lagunen is a surreal experience. The vibrant blue water against the rugged landscape feels like stepping into a painting. But let’s be real: it’s crowded, especially in summer. You’ll share that magic with a lot of other people. Still, if you can snag a quiet moment at sunrise, it’s worth every second. Just plan your visit wisely, and you’ll find the tranquility that makes this spot truly special.
