Backpacking in Lac de Taney
👀 For curious travelersbeach ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 5, 2026

Everyone shows up at Lac de Taney beach expecting some drive-up Alpine Maldives; then discovers you actually have to hike, sweat, and earn it. This little lake sits above Vouvry in the Valais, in a bowl of cliffs and forest that feels more mountain refuge than “beach day.” For backpackers, it’s a high-effort, high-reward spot: the water is cold but swimmable in summer, glass-clear, and the shoreline is clean because getting here filters out the lazy crowds. It still gets busy on sunny weekends, more picnic families and day-hikers than party kids, so the vibe is mellow, not wild. No surf, limited snorkel interest, but great for a post-hike plunge and loafing in the grass. Access is via steep trail, not flip-flop friendly, with a couple of rustic inns and simple food that’s cheaper than lakeside Geneva, but not exactly shoestring. Compared with Swiss lowland lakes like Léman or Thun, Taney is smaller, colder, quieter, and feels less like a “beach” and more like you accidentally walked into a postcard.

  • Alpine swimming and sunning on the rock slabs — The water is glacier-fed, staggeringly clear and cold, and the shoreline is more polished granite slabs than sand. You get a wild, mountain-lake dip with a natural sun-deck to dry off on. (Daytime; bring a neoprene top if you’re not into instant hypothermia.)
  • Mirror reflections at sunrise or glass-calm mornings — When the wind dies the peaks and trees sit perfectly reflected in the lake, which makes for unreal photos and a strangely peaceful vibe only a handful of early hikers catch. (Best at dawn/early morning.)

  • Shoreline picnics with alpine hut energy — The beach is a fantastic place to eat simple alpine fare—cheese, bread, a thermos—and watch hikers trickle in. It’s social without the commercial buzz; expect friendly chat and a hut-supplied vibe rather than neon nightlife.
  • Stargazing and night-time silence — Far from town lights, the sky here is dense with stars. Sitting on the cold rock listening to the lake at night is its own kind of magic; perfect for astro photos or just shutting off the world. (Night; be warm and quiet.)

  • Crowds: Peak season means more hikers and sunbathers, but Lac de Taney isn’t exactly Ibiza. You’ll find a manageable buzz rather than a sardine can vibe. Shoulder seasons offer solitude but at the risk of weather tantrums.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer invites swimming, hiking, and picnicking. In shoulder seasons, trails might be muddy, and the water too cold for anything but a daredevil dip. Winter turns the area into a frozen silence, beautiful but less beach-friendly.

  • Price Fluctuations: Switzerland doesn’t do cheap, but summer sees a slight uptick in local prices, especially for accommodation nearby. Off-season, you’ll find better deals but fewer services and less reliable weather.

Pro-tip: Aim for late June to early September—when the weather’s stable, the lake’s swim-ready, and the crowds are just enough to remind you you’re not alone in chasing alpine bliss.

Avoid the tourist traps in larger towns like Monthey. They’re overpriced and lack the character you crave. Stick to Taney and Troistorrents for a genuine experience. You’ll leave with more than just sunburn; you’ll have stories worth telling.

🛡️ SafetyTraveler Safety Guide

Lac de Taney beach is a serene spot, perfect for a dip without the ocean’s drama. The water is generally calm, with no riptides or waves to wrestle with. You can swim freely, but keep an eye on the weather; afternoon storms can roll in faster than you can say “Swiss chocolate.”

Sun exposure is real, so slather on that sunscreen, especially during midday when the sun is relentless. Locals tend to swim closer to the shore, where the water is warmer and the vibe more relaxed.

As for marine life, you won’t encounter jellyfish or sharks here—just the occasional curious fish. Theft isn’t rampant, but it’s wise to keep your belongings close. Enjoy the tranquility, but remember: even in paradise, a little situational awareness goes a long way.

✈️ When did I visit Switzerland?
Being so close to my home country, and me loving mountains, I have visited Switzerland many times in my childhood during summer holidays for hiking in the Alps. One of the most beautiful countries in the world, though expensive.
