Backpacking in Rapperswil
👌 Worth visitingtown ranked #18
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 3, 2026

Rapperswil is not for anyone chasing big-city chaos, clubbing, or edgy nightlife. But for backpackers, that’s exactly why it works: it’s a soft-landing pause button on the north shore of Lake Zurich, about an hour from the Alps and a quick train ride from Zurich itself. The old town is compact, cobbled, and easy to cross on foot in ten minutes, with the castle hill giving you that wide, glassy-lake view that makes the train fare feel worth it. It’s better as a slow-day base or a half-day stop between Zurich and eastern Switzerland than as a long-term hub: think lakeside walks, a wooden bridge over the water, and quiet cafés instead of bar crawls or hostel parties. Trains and buses are frequent, safe, and on time, and you’ll mostly meet day-trippers and locals rather than a big backpacker crowd, which keeps costs slightly lower than Zurich but still very Swiss. Compared with nearby Zurich or Winterthur, Rapperswil feels more small-town scenic than practical, more evening-stroll than night-out, and ideal when you want to breathe for a day without dropping out of the rail network.

What makes this town worth visiting

Rapperswil is a backpacker’s haven that strikes a balance between convenience and charm. Nestled by Lake Zurich, it’s a perfect launchpad for nearby hikes in the Zürich Oberland. The walkable streets invite you to explore local shops and cozy cafés, where the scent of fresh pastries fills the air. Small-scale hostels and guesthouses foster a friendly atmosphere, making it easy to connect with fellow travelers. Most backpackers stay a couple of days, soaking in the relaxed vibe and enjoying the beaches. It’s ideal for slow travelers and solo adventurers who appreciate a quieter pace, but don’t expect a bustling nightlife.

  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: Many outdoor activities, like wandering the lakeside promenade or hiking nearby trails, are free. Museums and attractions charge between €5 and €12. For example, the local castle museum entry is about €8, a small price for a deep dive into the town’s history.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Factor in about €5 to €10 daily for extras like bottled water, coffee, or a small souvenir. Switzerland’s prices add up quickly, so these little costs can surprise you if you’re not prepared.

All told, you’re looking at roughly €70 to €110 per day to cover the essentials without cutting corners. Rapperswil rewards those who embrace its pace—walking its cobbled streets, savoring a simple meal by the lake, and soaking in the quiet moments. The upfront cost feels like a worthy investment once you’re there, living it.
