Most online blurbs sell Chaguaramas National Park as pure “nature escape,” but the surprise is how much of it feels semi-urban and ex-military, with bunkers, old US bases, and paved roads cutting through the green. It sits on the Chaguaramas Peninsula in northwest Trinidad, just west of Port of Spain, so it’s one of the easiest “wild-ish” areas to reach by maxi taxi or car. You get short, steep hikes like Bamboo Cathedral and Tracking Station, coastal views, monkeys and birds, and no real entrance fee for the core trails, but also weekend crowds, traffic, and loud music near the beaches. Wild camping is basically a no-go and budget beds are outside the park, not in it. Compared with more remote areas like the Northern Range or Nariva Swamp, Chaguaramas is less pristine but far more accessible and time-efficient.
