Backpacking in Kackar Mountains
🏆 Top picknational park ranked #1
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 20, 2026

Most online blurbs sell Kaçkar Mountains National Park as “remote and untouched,” but the real surprise is how busy a few core valleys get with guided trekking groups while huge side valleys stay almost empty and feel wilder than the marketing admits. The park sits in Türkiye’s far northeast, in the Eastern Black Sea region of Rize and Artvin provinces, rising just inland from the humid coast. For backpackers, it’s a serious mountain playground: multi-day traverses over 3,000 m passes, glacier-fed lakes, foggy spruce forests, and semi-wild herds of horses and cattle that sometimes feel more common than people. Access is awkward—think slow minibuses, expensive taxis from coastal towns, and trailheads scattered between villages—and weather can shut things down fast. Fees are low, camping is widely tolerated near yayla (summer pasture) settlements, and basic pansiyons keep it budget-friendly. Compared with closer, more polished parks like Kaçkar’s coastal neighbor Altındere (Sumela) or the more arid Kaçkar-adjacent valleys in Yusufeli, Kaçkar proper feels rougher, less curated, and more rewarding if you’re willing to work for it.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while exploring Kackar Mountains

  • Kaçkar Summit (Kaçkar Dağı) — The park’s highest, most dramatic peak with glaciers, steep ridges and panoramic views that reward a proper multi-day trek. Not for casual walkers, but if you like scrambling, high camps and real alpine terrain this is the big draw.
  • Ayder Plateau (Ayder Yaylası) — Lush meadows, wooden guesthouses and hot springs make Ayder an easy, pretty basecamp. It’s touristier than the high trails but great for short walks, local food, and a little culture between hikes.
  • Fırtına Valley and its Stone Bridges — A wild mountain river carving deep, green gorges lined with old Ottoman stone bridges. Perfect for easy riverside walks, photography, and summer rafting if you want some adrenaline without going too far into the backcountry.

  • Pokut & Sal Plateaus — High grassy plateaus with crazy views down to the Black Sea on clear days, stunning sunrises and the famous “sea of clouds” mornings. Personal favorite — I’ll take a sunrise on Pokut over most city skylines any day.
  • Anzer Plateau and its endemic flora — Remote high meadows known for rare flowers and the famous Anzer honey made from local blooms. If you’re into botany or want a truly local specialty, this area is special in spring and early summer.
  • Glacial lakes, waterfalls and mountain wildlife — Scattered tarns and cascades fed by snowmelt make excellent day-hikes and picnic spots. Keep your eyes open for chamois, raptors and a rich variety of alpine plants — wildlife encounters are common but never guaranteed.

The terrain varies quite a bit; you’ll find everything from gentle slopes to steep, rocky paths, so be prepared for a workout.

One of the standout trails is the Kackar Summit Trail:
  • Length: 12 km
  • Estimated Duration: 6-8 hours
  • Difficulty Level: Hard
  • Key Features: Panoramic views from the summit, diverse flora, and the chance to see glacial lakes

  • Difficulty Level: Moderate
  • Key Features: Beautiful waterfalls, lush greenery, and traditional wooden houses
  • Terrain: Mostly well-maintained paths with some uneven sections

Getting to the park isn’t too tricky. You can catch a bus from major cities like Trabzon or Rize, and it usually takes a couple of hours. Just keep in mind that the park can get busy, especially in peak summer months, so if you’re looking for some solitude, aim for early mornings or late afternoons. There’s usually a small entrance fee, but it’s totally worth it for the breathtaking views and the chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle.
⚠️ Hiking info can sometimes be outdated or inaccurate. Before you hit the trail, check the latest conditions with locals. If you do spot anything that's off, I'd love to hear from you, so I can update it for fellow travelers.
