It’s the easy way to see a shoebill up close if you don’t have time for the wild ones. Foreign entry is roughly US$15 and a visit takes half a day.

Expect a quiet paddle of a few hours, with African jacanas and malachite kingfishers in between. Boats and guides can be booked through hostels around Entebbe for about US$30 to 40 per person.
- Evening grilled fish by the lake: At dusk the stalls and lakeside terraces start grilling whole tilapia over charcoal and serving it with chapati, roasted plantain and cold local beer. Sit facing the water and watch the sky turn orange over the lake. Meals cost about US$4 to 8, and travelers pay in local currency.
