Backpacking in Dzharylhach Island Trail
👌 Worth visitinghike ranked #9
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 25, 2026

Most people picture Dzharylhach Island as a lazy beach day with zero effort, but the Dzharylhach Island Trail is a real walk, not just a sunbed shuffle. Sitting in the Black Sea off the Kherson region in southern Ukraine, this sandbar of an island stretches into a long, exposed coastal hike where you crunch over shells, weave past salt lagoons, and push through soft sand that drains your legs faster than any mountain switchback. It’s mostly flat and low-risk, but the distance and heat turn it into an endurance test, and getting there means timing boats from the mainland instead of hopping easy city transport. Compared with Carpathian routes like Hoverla, it’s less dramatic, more primal: sea, wind, wild deer, and a lighthouse at the edge of nowhere.

Getting there is a breeze with public transport options that drop you close to the trailhead. Plus, it’s a low-cost endeavor, perfect for those on a budget. 1. Endless white sand beaches and wind-sculpted dunes — Walk for kilometres with almost no one in sight; the island’s long, soft beaches and shifting dunes feel more like a desert coastline than a typical Black Sea shore. It’s a rare, empty-beach experience in Ukraine where the sand and sky dominate the trail.
  2. Shallow turquoise sea and sprawling sandbars — The water here recedes into wide, warm flats so you can wade far out, cross temporary spits and watch the seabed change with every tide. Those shallow lagoons make for strange, photogenic reflections and perfect places to cool off without big waves or currents.

  3. Birdlife and migratory stopover zones — Dzharylhach is a magnet for waders, terns and gulls, especially in spring and autumn. Expect dramatic flocks, nesting colonies and easy shore-side birdwatching — bring binoculars and a quiet voice.
  4. Salt pans, mudflats and healing black mud — At low tide the island turns into a patchwork of salt crusts and dark, nutrient-rich mudflats that locals have long used for balneotherapy. The textures and colors are otherworldly, great for photos and the curious (but rinse thoroughly afterward).
  5. Raw panoramas and total solitude — The real highlight is the island’s emptiness: unbroken horizons, 360° sea-and-steppe views from the central spit, dramatic sunsets and the occasional lone fishing shack. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel genuinely off the map — and that’s rare on European hikes.

  • Crowds: Peak summer draws local weekenders and tourists, packing the trails and beaches. Shoulder seasons offer solitude and a chance to hear the island’s natural soundtrack uninterrupted.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer brings swimming

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer brings swimming and boating, while spring and fall focus on hiking and birdwatching. Winter’s too harsh for most outdoor fun here.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs spike in summer. Booking in shoulder seasons can save you a solid chunk of cash without sacrificing the experience.

Pro-tip: Hit the trail in late April or September to dodge crowds, enjoy crisp air, and catch the island’s raw beauty at its most accessible.

  • Ferry Terminal: The starting point where you’ll first set foot on the island.
  • Sand Dunes: Unique formations that offer great photo ops and a chance to cool off in the shade.
  • Old Lighthouse: A charming structure that’s a perfect spot for a break and some stunning views of the coastline.
  • Wildlife Observation Points: Areas where you can often spot various bird species and perhaps even some local wildlife.

Type of Terrain and Scenery: The trail features a mix of sandy paths, grassy areas, and some rocky sections. The scenery shifts from beach to forested areas, providing a nice variety.

Typical Vegetation and Wildlife:
  • Vegetation: The island is home to diverse plant life, including coastal grasses, wildflowers, and patches of pine trees.
  • Wildlife: Keep an eye out for migratory birds, especially during spring and fall. You might also spot rabbits, deer, and various insects along the way.

Pack enough water and snacks, as there are limited facilities on the island. A good pair of hiking shoes is essential, especially for the sandy sections. Enjoy the peace and quiet—this place has a way of making you feel like you’re miles away from everything.
⚠️ Hiking info can sometimes be outdated or inaccurate. Before you hit the trail, check the latest conditions with locals. If you do spot anything that's off, I'd love to hear from you, so I can update it for fellow travelers.
