Daytime is best for visibility and safety; at night this isn’t really a thing (cold, dark water — stick to stargazing instead).
• Rock pooling and shore critter hunts — The beach’s mix of sandy stretches and rocky outcrops means tide pools brimming with crabs, anemones and little fish are right there to poke about in. Best at low tide in daylight when you can see into the pools; not much to do here after dark except listen to the surf.
• Sea-kayaking / paddleboarding along the headlands — Easy launches from the sand let you explore nearby headlands, little coves and offshore

• Short coastal walks and cliff-top viewpoints — A few quick scrambles and paths from the car park give you sweeping views of the bay’s pale sand, sculpted rocks and the surrounding rugged hills — incredibly punchy contrasts you don’t always get on Scottish beaches. Daytime for the full panorama; early evening or sunset is special for long shadows and big skies, so bring a jacket and a head-torch for the walk back.
• Sunset, stargazing and occasional northern lights — The wide, pale sand and minimal light pollution make Achmelvich a top spot for watching the sunset and, when conditions align, brilliant starfields or even aurora. Nights here are genuinely dark — great for lying back and watching meteors — just check the forecast and remember it gets cold and damp quickly.

Personal favourite: Snorkelling — there’s something addictive about popping your head under and seeing that clear water and little ecosystems right off the beach.
