Backpacking in Ross Back Sands
👀 For curious travelersbeach ranked #29
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Everyone assumes Ross Back Sands is some secret Bondi of the north; it’s not - it’s a wild, wind-slapped strip of sand where you’re more likely to meet a seal than a sunbed. Tucked on the Northumberland coast in the UK, it’s gloriously clean, almost empty, and the scenery across to Holy Island feels huge. Swimming is cold and can be rough, surfing is hit-or-miss, and there’s zero snorkel action. Access is a walk through dunes, not a roll-your-suitcase situation, and there’s no beachfront chips or hostels - you base yourself in Bamburgh or Seahouses for budget beds and food. Compared with nearby Bamburgh Beach or Seahouses’ busier stretch, Ross Back Sands is the quiet, slightly feral cousin: less convenient, more soul.

✈️ When did I visit the UK?
United Kingdom being my neighbour country with just the North Sea separating us, I visited it multiple times. In May 2015 I had a car trip through Southern England and Wales. In July 2023 I backpacked through Northern Ireland and in October 2023 I visited a friend I met in Pakistan, who showed me around Isle of Skye and Ullapool.
