Backpacking in Tower Bridge
👍 Recommendedunique site ranked #7
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Everyone shows up at Tower Bridge chasing that one postcard shot, but the truth is the bridge is more interesting to walk through than to photograph from a distance. What actually matters is how it anchors you in the story of the Thames and the old docks, right on the edge of the City of London and the Tower of London in the UK. As a backpacker, you get big wow-factor for almost no effort: it’s free to cross, insanely easy to reach, and the views up and down the river are legit. The paid glass-floor exhibition is cool but overpriced if you’re counting pennies. It’s crowded, yes, and selfie-stick central at sunset, but wander a block or two riverside and the vibe calms down fast; that’s where I usually linger.

Discover everything you want to know in the 📖 the UK Travel Guide.

What makes this unique site worth visiting

Tower Bridge isn’t just a pretty face; it’s a working drawbridge that embodies the spirit of London. Sure, it’s a crowd magnet, but that’s part of its charm. You’ll rub shoulders with tourists, but don’t let that deter you. The view from the walkway is worth the hustle. You’ll get a unique perspective of the Thames and the city’s skyline that you can’t find anywhere else.

Cost-wise, it’s reasonable. The ticket price is a small price to pay for the history and engineering marvel you’re stepping into. Plus, it fits seamlessly into a broader route—wander along the Thames, hit up the Tate Modern, and stroll through Borough Market.

So, take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship and the vibrant life around it. It’s a piece of the UK that’s not just Instagram fodder; it’s a slice of history that resonates.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  • Glass-floor high-level walkways — Step onto the 42-metre-high glass floors and look straight down at the traffic and river below. It’s a modern thrill inside a Victorian landmark, and the view gives you a fresh perspective on how the bridge actually works.
  • Tower Bridge Exhibition (tower displays and history) — The exhibition walks you through the bridge’s design, construction and restoration with original drawings, photos and interactive displays. It’s where the engineering story meets the human stories behind London’s most photographed crossing.
  • Victorian Engine Rooms — See the original steam engines and hydraulic machinery that used to power the bascules; they’ve been beautifully preserved and explain the industrial ingenuity of the era. If you like mechanical history, this is pure gold—sleek

  • Watch a Bridge Lift (personal favorite) — When the bascules open to let ships pass, the whole structure comes alive; it’s dramatic and oddly graceful. You can plan around the published lift schedule to catch it for free from the riverbank—best live show in the neighborhood.
  • Panoramic Thames and skyline views — From the towers and walkways you get framed views of the Tower of London, the Shard, the City and the river traffic threading between them. Great for sunrise or sunset photos, and for orienting yourself in London from a high, central spot.
  • Nighttime lighting and photography spots — The bridge is beautifully illuminated after dark, with reflections on the Thames that make for moody photos and quieter strolls. Walk the embankment on either side for different compositions; the bridge looks completely different at night.

  • Crowds: Tower Bridge is a magnet for tourists, especially in summer and school holidays. Early mornings or late afternoons during shoulder seasons (April-May, September-October) offer fewer crowds and a more relaxed vibe.
  • Seasonal Activities: Summer sometimes features special events on or near the bridge, like river races or light shows, adding a unique layer to your visit. Winter’s festive markets nearby can be charming but expect more foot traffic.
  • Price Fluctuations: Entry fees and nearby accommodation spike in peak season. Booking in shoulder months can save you a decent chunk, and some tours offer discounts outside summer.
Pro-tip: Hit Tower Bridge just after sunrise in late spring or early autumn—cool air, soft light, and a near-empty bridge make for a genuinely memorable experience without the tourist crush.

Then there’s Bermondsey. A bit quieter, it offers a local feel with its trendy cafes and the famous Borough Market nearby. It’s a great spot for solo backpackers who want to connect with others while enjoying some of the best street food in the city.

Lastly, consider Shad Thames. This area has a unique character, with its cobbled streets and riverside views. It’s less touristy, so you can soak in the real essence of London without the chaos.

These neighborhoods provide a genuine experience without breaking the bank, making them worth your time.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, completed in 1894, spanning the River Thames near the Tower of London. It is famous for its two iconic towers and the high-level walkways that offer panoramic views of the city. The bridge also houses a museum detailing its history and engineering.
Visiting Tower Bridge typically takes about 1 to 2 hours, including time to explore the engine rooms, walk the high-level glass floor walkways, and visit the exhibition. Allow extra time if you want to take photos or join a guided tour. The bridge opens to visitors daily from 9:30 AM to 6 PM, with last entry at 5 PM.

We 💚 feedbackSumming up the experience

Tower Bridge is iconic, no doubt. The way it lights up at night? Pure magic. But let’s be real: the crowds can be overwhelming, especially during peak hours. You’ll be jostling for that perfect photo. Still, if you take a moment to stroll along the Thames nearby, you’ll find a quieter vibe that reveals the bridge’s true charm. It’s worth it for the history and the views—just be ready for the hustle.

✈️ When did I visit the UK?
United Kingdom being my neighbour country with just the North Sea separating us, I visited it multiple times. In May 2015 I had a car trip through Southern England and Wales. In July 2023 I backpacked through Northern Ireland and in October 2023 I visited a friend I met in Pakistan, who showed me around Isle of Skye and Ullapool.
