The beluga whales gave a low, chirping whistle through the glass, and a toddler beside me answered with a perfect imitation while her father checked his phone for the third time. That is Shedd Aquarium on a weekend: loud, damp, and oddly tender. It sits on Chicago’s Museum Campus, just south of the Loop in the north of the United States, with Lake Michigan right behind it. Tickets are pricey and school groups clog the Amazon Rising hall by late morning, so go early. The payoff is the Wild Reef sharks swimming overhead and the dolphin and sea otter habitats.

Shedd Aquarium earns a place on a Chicago route because it houses one of the largest collections of aquatic animals in the country, with Wild Reef built around sharks in a series of curved tanks below ground. Few city attractions put you eye to eye with a Pacific white-sided dolphin or a 400-pound giant grouper before lunch. The Abbott Oceanarium adds belugas, dolphins and sea lions with a view of the lake behind them. It also anchors the lakefront, so a morning here fits easily with the nearby Field Museum and Adler Planetarium. Come when rain rules out the beaches, and you will spend the money well.

The South Loop and the Loop put you within 1 to 3 kilometers (0.6 to 2 miles) of Shedd Aquarium, and the South Loop is the better pick for budget travelers. It sits just west of the museum campus, with Roosevelt Road offering cheap eats, grocery stores and quick Red Line access. The Loop is the other strong choice. Its hostels and budget hotels cluster near the Blue, Brown and Red Line stations, so you can reach the lakefront by train or on foot in about 25 minutes.
