Your first real fork in the road with Ha Long Bay is simple but expensive if you get it wrong: do you book a cheap day trip from Hanoi, or commit to an overnight (or longer) cruise leaving from Ha Long City or Cat Ba? That choice decides whether you’re stuck in a queue of boats doing the same loop, or actually get quiet pockets of limestone cliffs and dark sky. Ha Long Bay sits in northeastern Vietnam, in Quang Ninh Province, spilling out into the Gulf of Tonkin. For backpackers, the bay is visually outrageous and logistically annoying. The scenery is the headline; hiking and wildlife are side characters unless you base yourself on Cat Ba Island and use it as a springboard into Cat Ba National Park, which has better trails, more jungle, and cheaper rooms. Compared with Bai Tu Long or Lan Ha, Ha Long proper is busier, pricier, and less wild—but also easier to reach, book, and navigate when you’re tired and just want the classic view.
