Backpacking in Pleiku
🌟 Highlightcity ranked #17
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 7, 2026

Most people skip Pleiku, but it’s one of the few Vietnamese cities where you can still feel a real highlands town going about its day with almost no backpacker script. Sitting in Vietnam’s Central Highlands between Quy Nhon’s coast and Kon Tum’s history, it’s low on sights but high on texture: coffee farms, war-era sites like Camp Holloway, and T’Nung Lake for quiet sunsets. It’s cheap, safe, and easy to navigate, but meeting other travelers is harder than in Da Lat or Hoi An, so it suits independent, curiosity-driven wanderers more than hostel-party hunters.

  • Shared Minivans: Run between Pleiku and nearby towns, departing when full rather than on a strict schedule. They cost around $3-$5, offering a middle ground between speed and cost but require flexibility on timing.

  • Private Taxi: The priciest option, starting at about $10 for short rides. Offers comfort and direct routes but eats into your budget quickly, so reserve it for when time is tight or you’re carrying heavy gear.

  • City Transport Pass: Pleiku doesn’t have a formal city transport pass system. Instead, budget around $2 to $4 daily if you rely on multiple motorbike taxi rides or occasional rented motorbikes.
  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: Museums, local temples, and parks typically charge between $1 and $3. These modest fees support preservation and offer insight into Pleiku’s cultural fabric.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Water, snacks, occasional coffee, or small souvenirs add up to about $1 to $3 daily. Bottled water is essential in the tropical climate.

All told, you’re looking at a daily budget roughly between $12 and $25. This range gives you flexibility: lean into the lower end by embracing street food and dorm stays, or add a bit more comfort and activity with mid-range choices. Pleiku rewards those who understand the trade-offs—spend smart, and you’ll get a genuine slice of Vietnam without breaking the bank.
⚠️ Prices can change and everyone travels differently, so take this as a rough guide. Hope it helps you plan your adventure!
