🙋 FAQItinerary planner questions about Puerto Rico

Five days covers a first look at Puerto Rico, with San Juan and one or two other areas. Ten days lets you cross the island and add a trip to Vieques or Culebra, and fifteen days gives you time to slow down in each place.
Puerto Rico is an island in the Caribbean with no land borders, so there’s no overland combination. The nearest countries by short flight are the Dominican Republic, which lies just west across the Mona Passage, and the US Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands to the east.

Build a multi-country route

🗺️ RegionsGetting a feel for the geography

Puerto Rico is a compact island, but the distances between places add up faster than you’d expect. San Juan on the north coast and Ponce on the south coast are the two big anchors, and the ride between them takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours without stops. Add an island like Isla de Vieques off the east coast and a single day can disappear into getting there. The planner groups nearby places together and moves you in one direction, so you aren’t crossing the island twice for two stops that could have shared a day.

⚙️ How it worksHow your trip comes together

Pick your trip length, your interests and your pace, and the planner turns real Puerto Rico locations into a day-by-day route. First, it groups places that sit close together, so you aren’t driving back and forth across the island for one stop. Second, it picks one sensible direction through those groups, so the trip moves forward instead of zigzagging. Third, it sets the time for each stop by its type and by how much sits nearby. Take San Juan: with several landmarks, attractions and neighborhoods packed around it, it becomes a base where you stay for multiple nights, and the smaller spots close by turn into easy day trips from the same bed. A lone beach or trailhead far from anything else gets a shorter slot, since there’s nothing around it to fill extra days. Choose a relaxed pace and you’ll see fewer stops per day and more time in each base. Choose a fast pace and the clusters get tighter, with more stops packed in. Either way, the route makes sense on a map before you ever pack a bag.
