Ten, fifteen years ago, Khost Province was a place you mostly heard about in security briefings, not daydreams. These days, if you do the homework and move smart, you find a very different face: green valleys, tight-knit villages, and a frontier feel that Kabul or even Nangarhar have mostly lost. Khost sits in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border, and for backpackers it’s as raw as it gets: low daily costs, almost no tourist markup, and hospitality that can feel overwhelming in the best way. The trade-off is serious: security can be volatile, roads between towns are slow and rough, and you’re operating far outside any tourist infrastructure.
