Backpacking in Shah Foladi Protected Area
👌 Worth visitingnational park ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 21, 2026

Most people who’ve heard of Shah Foladi Protected Area assume it’s either completely off-limits or a polished, ranger-run national park. It’s neither. This high-altitude protected area sits in Bamyan Province, in central Afghanistan, south of Bamyan town, and it’s a serious mountain playground if you know what you’re walking into. You get big, raw ridgelines, alpine meadows, and real wildlife potential, but almost no infrastructure: trail markings are vague, public transport is thin, and you’re relying on local guides more than maps. Entrance fees, if collected, are low and inconsistent, and crowds are basically non-existent compared with Band-e Amir’s lakes or Koh-e Baba’s more visited valleys. Camping is usually wild or in basic village homestays, cheap but very simple. The vibe is quiet, conservative, and practical: come to hike hard and observe, not to be entertained.

  • Rugged limestone peaks and cirques: Sharp ridgelines and bowl-shaped mountain cirques give the area a dramatic, alpine feel. Hike any clear day and you’ll get wide, rocky panoramas that feel a long way from civilization.
  • Deep gorges and seasonal cascades: Narrow canyons cut into the limestone produce impressive cliffs and, after snowmelt, temporary waterfalls and clear streams. The contrast between arid slopes and sudden green ribbons of water is striking.
  • High-altitude meadows (summer pastures): In summer the valleys turn into lush yak-and-sheep grazing grounds carpeted with wildflowers. It’s the best time for easy day walks and to see traditional tented camps scattered across the slopes.

  • Mountain wildlife — ibex and wild sheep: The area supports hardy ungulates like Siberian ibex and other mountain sheep. They’re accustomed to steep terrain, so watch rocky ledges with binoculars rather than expecting them on the trail.
  • Raptors and vulture species: Cliff faces are ideal perches for birds of prey. Keep an eye out for eagles and large scavengers like bearded vultures cruising thermals over the valleys.
  • Snow leopard habitat (rare sightings): Shah Foladi is suitable habitat for snow leopards, though actually seeing one is exceptionally unlikely. Still, knowing you’re in their range adds a real sense of wildness to the trek.
  • Ridgeline hiking and sunrise/sunset viewpoints: Simple ridge hikes yield huge payoff — long vistas down into surrounding valleys, great light at dawn and dusk, and clear spots for camping if you’re self-sufficient. Minimal trail infrastructure makes route-finding part of the fun.

Pro-tip: Aim for late May to early July to balance weather, daylight, and fewer logistical headaches—this timing preserves your energy for the trails, not battling the elements or inflated costs.
