Backpacking in Fort Barrington
👌 Worth visitingunique site ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The view from the top of Fort Barrington is the whole reason to come: St. John’s harbor, the white twin towers of the cathedral and the cruise ships lined up at the pier, all laid out below a low stone wall. The fort sits on Goat Hill, northwest of St. John’s on the Antigua side of Antigua and Barbuda, above the sheltered curve of Deep Bay. The ruins are modest, a few walls and gun platforms, so don’t expect a museum. The 10 to 15 minute scramble up is worth your time, and a swim at the bay afterward is the best part of the outing. Go early, before the sun clears the ridge, when the rock is cool and the light flatters the water. Skip it at midday. There is almost no shade, and photos wash out. Bring water and shoes with grip, because the path is loose in places.

Why Fort Barrington should be on your travel list

Fort Barrington gives you the best harbor panorama on the island for the price of a short, sweaty climb, and that is a rare bargain. From the summit you can trace the entrance that the fort was built to guard, then look across to the headland where Fort James watches from the other side. Goat Hill makes the history easy to read: you see exactly why gunners wanted this spot. The fort also pairs neatly with Deep Bay, right at the foot of the hill, where calm shallow water and a snorkelable shipwreck turn a quick viewpoint stop into a half-day. If you are staying in or near St. John’s, it fits between breakfast and lunch without any planning. Hikers who want a bigger challenge will find it small, but first-timers and families will appreciate a trail that finishes in minutes rather than hours. … read more 👉

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

The best window for Fort Barrington is December through April, when rain is rare and the hike up Goat Hill is dry underfoot.
  • Dry Season (December to April): Highs of 28 to 30°C (82 to 86°F), cooler nights around 22 to 24°C (72 to 75°F), steady trade winds on the summit. Days run about 11 to 12 hours. Accommodation rates are highest, but the fort itself stays quiet.
  • Wet Season (June to November): Highs of 30 to 33°C (86 to 91°F), heavy humidity and afternoon downpours. September to November is the wettest stretch, and hurricane risk peaks from August to October. Rooms are cheaper by 20 to 40 percent.
  • Shoulder Months (May): Warm, mostly dry, with low prices and few visitors.
  • Time of Day: The summit has almost no shade, so early morning beats midday heat in every season.
Start the climb by 8 a.m. and carry at least a liter of water per person.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas to stay in Antigua & Barbuda

Most backpackers stay in St. John’s or the south-west coast near Jolly Harbour, since Fort Barrington sits on Goat Hill at the mouth of St. John’s Harbour, a short ride from both.
St. John’s is the practical choice for budget travelers. You get the bus terminals, the public market, cheap local food and the cruise-ship waterfront at Heritage Quay. Guesthouses and small inns cluster in the town and nearby Villa area, and you can reach the trailhead by taxi in about 15 minutes. The center is lively by day but quiet after dark, so take a taxi at night instead of walking.

Jolly Harbour is the easier base for beaches, a supermarket and a marina bar scene. It suits travelers who want a pool and apartment-style rooms with kitchens, which keeps costs down for groups splitting a unit. Buses are less frequent here, so plan on shared taxis.
Dickenson Bay and Runaway Bay on the north side have more social restaurants and beach bars, but rooms cost more and the fort is a longer drive. Book ahead from December to April, when the cheaper places fill first.

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on visiting Fort Barrington

Fort Barrington has a detail that first-timers walk right past: the low wall at the top is the best place to see the harbor’s whole entrance line, with Fort James sitting on the far headland. I would stand there for a minute before photographing anything. Then pack a mask and walk down to Deep Bay.
