Backpacking in Old Road
👀 For curious travelersvillage ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Old Road was once a sleepy sugar-and-fishing settlement where most visitors only passed through on the way to somewhere else. Today it still feels that way, just with a few more rental cars parked beside the beach shacks. It sits on the southwest coast of Antigua and Barbuda, in the hills and coves below Boggy Peak. Come in the morning, when the road to Carlisle Bay is quiet and the water is flat, and you get a swim with almost nobody around. Evenings are early and calm, with a few rum shops and beach bars, so meeting other travelers takes some effort. Hikers, beach lovers and slow travelers will like it most. Anyone chasing nightlife or hostels will be bored.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #5 village in Antigua & Barbuda
The unique appeal for travelers

Old Road works for backpackers who want a quiet base on the southwest side of the island, away from the resort strips. The big draw is the terrain: the road climbs toward Boggy Peak, the island's highest point, and drops to small bays where you can snorkel off the rocks. Many people stay two or three nights, long enough to hike, swim and let the pace drop. It is a settlement of fishermen and farmers, so you will see nets drying and goats on the verges, and neighbors who greet you by default. Social life is low-key. You will chat with the few other guests at your guesthouse or at a beach bar, but nobody comes here for a party. It suits solo travelers who like calm, couples and hikers with a rental car or a bit of patience for local buses. Anyone who needs constant company should treat it as a short stop, or just a day.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. Carlisle Bay Beach: A long, sheltered crescent just east of the village with calm water and a reef edge for easy snorkeling. Mornings are quietest. Free to walk onto, though sun loungers at the resort side cost money. Allow 2 to 3 hours.
  2. Rendezvous Bay: A small cove reached by a rough track and a short scramble over a ridge. The sand is pale, the water clear, and you may have it to yourself on weekdays. Free, plan 2 to 3 hours including the walk, and bring water and shoes with grip.
Old Road makes a handy base for day trips to Fort James near St. John's, the climb up Boggy Peak, and the pottery and craft shops at Sea View Farm Village. The beaches cost nothing, so they are the cheapest way to fill a day.

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

  • Dry Season (December to April): Old Road gets its steadiest sunshine, with highs of 28 to 30°C (82 to 86°F) and nights around 22 to 24°C (72 to 75°F). Roughly 11 hours of daylight make for long beach and trail days. Expect the busiest roads and the highest rates.
  • Shoulder Months (May to June): Heat builds toward 30°C (86°F), showers are short, and the south coast is quiet. Prices ease noticeably.
  • Wet Season (July to November): Humid, 29 to 32°C (84 to 90°F), with heavy downpours. Hurricane risk peaks from August to October, and some guesthouses close or discount heavily.
  • Carnival (late July to early August): Island-wide parties lift prices and fill beds in St. John’s, though Old Road stays calm.
Book a May or early December stay for decent weather and softer rates.

🛏️ Where to stay?Where staying makes the most sense

Old Road has only a handful of beds, mostly small guesthouses and villa rentals, so most backpackers pair it with a base in nearby Jolly Harbour or English Harbour. Dorm-style hostels barely exist on Antigua at all. Expect private rooms and apartments instead.
In Old Road: Simple self-catering apartments and guesthouses run about US$70 to 130 a night, and you can cook with produce from the roadside stands. A few places sit near Carlisle Bay and Curtain Bluff, but those resorts cost US$800 and up, so skip them on a budget.

Jolly Harbour (about 15 minutes by bus or taxi): Condos and budget rooms from US$80 to 140, plus a supermarket and several beaches. Splitting a two-bedroom with a friend brings the per-person rate down fast.
English Harbour and Falmouth (30 to 40 minutes): More guesthouses, sailing crowds and cheaper bar meals. Rooms start near US$70 off-season.

Book early from December through April. Buses run only in daylight and finish early, so choose somewhere you can walk to dinner.

🚌 Day tripsExploring the surroundings

Old Road works well as a base for day trips because the main south-coast road reaches most sights in under an hour, though buses are infrequent and stop by late afternoon, so plan on early starts.
Shirley Heights and Nelson’s Dockyard:
The hilltop lookout over English Harbour is the island’s best view, and the Sunday evening barbecue with steel band and grill smoke is the main event. Allow 45 minutes each way by taxi (about US$45 to 60 one way) or buses with a change at Falmouth. Dockyard entry is about US$8 to 10 for visitors, and the Sunday party about US$10 to 15. Many first-timers arrive too late for the sunset and miss the best light.

Fig Tree Drive and Wallings Forest:
The road climbs from the coast through banana plants, mango trees and small stands, finishing near Wallings Reservoir. It is a short drive of 15 to 25 minutes, and a shared taxi costs a few dollars, or about US$30 to 40 for a private ride. Go in the dry months, when the trails stay firm. Wear closed shoes, as mud gets slick after rain.

Darkwood Beach:
A wide, quiet sweep of sand on the west side, with calm water and a beach bar at its end. The ride takes about 20 minutes and costs around US$2 on a bus or US$15 to 25 by taxi. Visit midweek, because cruise-ship days and weekends fill the sand. Bring your own water, since shade is limited.
👉 Explore Darkwood Beach
St. John’s:
The capital offers a lively market, the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, and cheap lunches near the bus station. Buses take about 35 to 45 minutes and cost US$1.50 to 3. Go Saturday morning for the best produce, and leave before mid-afternoon when the last buses thin out.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Most travelers reach Old Road by taxi or bus from St. John’s along the southwest coast, a drive of roughly 30 to 40 minutes. A taxi from V.C. Bird International Airport costs about US$35 to 50, while the bus via St. John’s costs under US$5 but needs a change. Buses stop running by late afternoon, so arrive in daylight.
Old Road suits travelers who want a quiet south-coast stop with quick access to Carlisle Bay, Fig Tree Drive and the rainforest rather than nightlife. A day or two is enough for beaches, local lunches and the nearby viewpoints. Anyone seeking hostels or big parties will find better options in English Harbour or St. John’s.
Old Road can easily be done as a day trip from St. John’s or Jolly Harbour, since both are 15 to 40 minutes away by road. A taxi runs about US$25 to 45 each way, and buses cost US$1.50 to 3. Leave by mid-afternoon so you can catch the last bus back, and combine the visit with Fig Tree Drive.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Old Road is for travelers who like a day of walking and swimming followed by an early night, so hikers and quiet-seeking couples will be happiest. I would bring reef shoes and a good hat, and skip the crowded south coast for a night or two to stay here instead.
