Backpacking in Shirley Heights
🏆 Top pickunique site ranked #1
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The Sunday barbecue at Shirley Heights starts with steel pan music drifting over the ridge and the smell of grilled ribs and jerk chicken from the smoking oil-drum grills beside the old gun platform. The lookout sits on the southeast coast of Antigua and Barbuda, on a ridge high above English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour. The wow-factor is the view: yachts like toy boats in the bays, Montserrat’s smoky outline on a clear day, and the red-tiled Georgian roofs of Nelson’s Dockyard below. Arrive about an hour before the sun drops, grab a spot on the stone wall, and you get the light show without the elbowing. The road up is steep and twisty, and the party crowd is large, loud and mostly cruise and resort visitors, so expect queues for food. Other days are quieter, though Thursday afternoons bring a smaller barbecue with a steel band. Unlike Fort Berkeley, the small ruin down at the harbor mouth, Shirley Heights is high, social and set up for an evening.

Why Shirley Heights should be on your travel list

Shirley Heights gives you the best-known panorama in Antigua for almost nothing, and the effort is small: a taxi or a hike up from English Harbour gets you to the top. The Blockhouse ruins and the Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre sit close by on the same ridge, so the trip becomes a half-day of walking with views at each turn. The big draw is the Sunday evening party, a weekly tradition with a live steel band followed by a reggae and soca band, which puts you among locals, sailors and visitors at once. It is the one night in the week when this corner of the island is properly lively, and you can fit it between the beaches of the south coast and a walk around Nelson’s Dockyard, a UNESCO-listed Georgian naval base within easy reach on foot. English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour are the best bases, because Shirley Heights sits on the ridge directly above both and you can reach the lookout in 30 to 45 minutes on foot or a few minutes by taxi. English Harbour is the more atmospheric choice. It has the old dockyard, small guesthouses, waterside bars, and sailors and crew who gather in the evenings, so solo travelers meet people easily. It is also safe to walk around after dark, with lit streets and a steady crowd.
Falmouth Harbour, a short walk or a few minutes by taxi away, has more apartments and self-catering rooms, supermarkets, and yacht-crew cafes. It suits longer stays and anyone who wants to cook, and it is slightly cheaper than English Harbour.
Nelson’s Dockyard area has the best social scene, but beds are limited and fill quickly from December to April, so book early.
For a lower budget, look at Liberta or Old Road, a short bus or taxi ride away. They are quieter and local in feel, though you will rely on taxis after dark. Buses run mainly in daylight, so Sunday-night travelers should arrange a return taxi before leaving the party. The island has few dorm beds, so budget travelers often choose private rooms or shared apartments.

FAQTraveler FAQ

Shirley Heights is a hilltop military lookout above English Harbour on Antigua’s south coast, famous for sweeping views over Nelson’s Dockyard and Falmouth Harbour. Its Sunday evening party, with a steel band, grilled meat, and rum punch, runs from about 4 pm until after dark. The party costs about US$8 to 10 at the gate, and food is extra.
Shirley Heights takes about one to two hours for the viewpoint, old gun batteries, and photos. Allow three to four hours if you visit on a Sunday, so you can arrive before sunset and stay for the band. A full day also fits in Nelson’s Dockyard and the walk up from English Harbour.
Shirley Heights is about 25 to 35 minutes by road from St. John’s, roughly 20 km (12 miles), depending on traffic. A taxi from the capital costs about US$40 to 60 each way, while buses to English Harbour cost a few dollars and leave you with a steep walk of 30 to 45 minutes uphill. Renting a car is the easiest option, but the roads are narrow and traffic drives on the left.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Shirley Heights deserves one evening, not a whole day. I would go up on a Sunday, stay for sunset and the first set of the steel band, then head down before the traffic jams. If you only want the view, a quiet weekday afternoon is enough. Bring a light jacket for the breeze and shoes with grip for the path.
