Backpacking in Dos Playa
👌 Worth visitingbeach ranked #8
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 7, 2026

Most people hear “Dos Playa” and picture a resort’s second infinity pool; in reality it’s two raw, wind-blasted coves on Aruba’s wild east coast, inside Arikok National Park. For backpackers, it’s more “end-of-the-world picnic spot” than beach club day. The pros: dramatic cliffs, pounding surf, almost no crowds, and a rough, beautiful emptiness you’ll never get at Eagle or Palm Beach. The cons: the sand can be scruffy with seaweed and trash, swimming is dangerous thanks to currents, and there’s zero shade, facilities, or lifeguards. Good for watching waves and maybe advanced bodyboarding, not for snorkeling or diving. You’ll need a vehicle or long, hot hike, and you’re far from cheap food or hostels, which cluster back on the calmer west side.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #8 beach in Aruba
Reasons people choose to visit here

At first glance, Dos Playa in Aruba might seem like just another beach, but it’s a backpacker’s oasis. The laid-back atmosphere invites you to kick off your shoes and breathe. It’s not just about the sand and surf; it’s a place to recharge your spirit and connect with fellow travelers.

Affordability is key here. You can grab a cold drink without feeling like you’ve just financed a small country. The social scene is vibrant, with travelers swapping stories and tips like currency. Plus, the water access is a game-changer. You can dive in, float around, or just enjoy the view while plotting your next move along the coast.

Think of Dos Playa as a connector on your journey, a pause that refreshes. It’s not merely a stop to swim; it’s a moment to soak in the vibe, laugh at the absurdities of travel, and maybe even make a friend or two.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  • Daytime highlights
    1. Twin-cove viewpoint — Two small coves carved into the rocky coast sit side-by-side; the split view and crashing surf make for dramatic, postcard-worthy photos you won’t get on Aruba’s calmer west side.
    2. Rugged hike-in approach — A short, rocky trail through the national park gives the place a proper “you earned this” feel; it’s part of the experience — not a resort stroll — so bring sturdy shoes and water.
    3. Tide pools & sculpted rock features — At lower tides you can pick through pools full of small marine life and explore uniquely eroded rock shapes that make for great macro shots and close-up discovery.
    4. Wave-and-spray amphitheater — The cove funnels swell into a noisy, showy display; watching breakers slam into the cliffs from a safe perch is hypnotic

    4. Wave-and-spray amphitheater — The cove funnels swell into a noisy, showy display; watching breakers slam into the cliffs from a safe perch is hypnotic (and far better than swimming here, which can be dangerous).
    5. Secluded picnic & downtime — No facilities, few people: perfect for a quiet lunch, reading, or just getting away from the crowds. Bring shade, water, and pack out everything — there’s no trash service.
  • Nighttime highlights (if you choose to visit)
    1. Stargazing from the cliffs — Low light pollution and a wide horizon make this a top spot for constellations and Milky Way views on clear nights — way better than beach bars and neon.
    2. Moonlit surf spectacle — Full or near-full moons turn the crashing waves silver; the cliff vantage gives you dramatic reflections and moodier photos than daytime shots.
    3. Long-exposure rock-and-wave photography — With a tripod you can capture smooth, milky water against jagged silhouettes — very cinematic, and unique because of the cliff formations.
    4. Nocturnal shorelife watching — Quiet evenings bring out ghost crabs and other small critters along the sand and rocks; observe with red or dim light and no flash to avoid disturbing them.
    5. Moonlit, mindful walks (take care) — The soundscape at night is superb for slow, reflective walks. Important: check park rules and don’t wander close to cliff edges — go with a light and ideally a partner.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities – The island’s carnival in February adds a cultural punch, but it also means more noise and less beach tranquility. For pure beach vibes, skip carnival week.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Expect accommodation and flights to spike during peak season. Off-peak months offer wallet-friendly deals but brace for occasional weather curveballs.

Pro-tip: Visit just before or after peak season—April or November—to dodge crowds and price gouges while still catching mostly dry, warm days.

Next, consider the outskirts of Oranjestad. It’s a bit more touristy, but you can still find budget-friendly accommodations. The social scene is lively, and you’ll have access to markets and eateries that won’t break the bank. Just keep your eyes peeled for the overpriced tourist traps.

In both areas, safety is generally solid, but always trust your gut. Embrace the quirks of travel—like figuring out the local bus schedule—and you’ll find that the grind is part of the adventure.

🛡️ SafetySafety Tips and Common Scams in Dos Playa

Dos Playa in Aruba is a slice of paradise, but it’s not without its quirks. The waves can be playful, but keep an eye on the currents. They’re not always obvious, so stick to where the locals swim. If you see a flag, pay attention; it’s there for a reason.

Marine life? Mostly chill, but jellyfish can pop up unexpectedly. Just be aware. As for the sun, it’s relentless. Lather on that sunscreen early and often, especially in the afternoon when the rays are at their peak.

Keep your belongings close. Theft isn’t rampant, but it’s smart to stay vigilant. Enjoy the beach, soak in the vibes, and embrace the little absurdities of travel. It’s all part of the adventure.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Dos Playa is a slice of paradise that feels like a well-kept secret, even if it’s not. The vibe? Chill, with a hint of adventure. You’ll find soft sands and waves that whisper sweet nothings. The best surprise? The local iguanas casually sunbathing like they own the place. Just a heads-up: the trek to get there can be a bit of a slog, but trust me, it’s worth every sweaty step.
