Backpacking in Alexandra Headland
👀 For curious travelersbeach ranked #22
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Parking is free along Alex Heads’ northern end, which beats most of the Sunshine Coast. The beach sits between Mooloolaba and Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast of southeast Queensland, Australia. Walking in from the Alexandra Headland esplanade, I got halfway before a pelican blocked the footpath and stared me down until a jogger gave way first. The reward is a long curve of sand with surf and a flat-water patch near the rocks. It is tidy but busy at weekends. Surfers and families will love it; party seekers won’t.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #22 beach in Australia
Why Alexandra Headland should be on your travel list

Backpackers stop here because the Alexandra Headland esplanade gives you a free, flat walking and cycling path linking Mooloolaba and Maroochydore, so you can wander with a coffee instead of planning a transport day. The water is the other draw: consistent beach breaks beside the headland suit beginners and learners, and board rental shops sit close to the sand. Cheap takeaway and supermarkets are a few minutes away, which keeps a long coastal stay affordable without leaving the beach for long.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. Alexandra Headland Surf Break: The headland shapes the swell here, so waves are steadier than on exposed stretches. Beginners can learn on the beach side, while experienced surfers work the point.
  2. Headland Lookout Walk: A short climb on the grassy rise gives you views north to Maroochydore and south toward Mooloolaba. It is free and takes about twenty minutes.
  3. Esplanade Coastal Pathway: Walk or cycle the smooth path along the sand toward Mooloolaba. Cafés and shaded benches give you plenty of places to stop.
  4. Sunrise on the Sand: The beach faces east, so the sun lifts straight out of the Coral Sea. Surfers paddle out as the sky turns orange, and the sand is quiet.
Combine the sunrise on the sand with the headland lookout walk, and you will have a full morning of views before the crowds arrive.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas to stay in Australia

Mooloolaba and Maroochydore are the best bases, a 10 to 15 minute drive or short bus ride from Alexandra Headland. Mooloolaba sits right on the sand with a lively Esplanade, a social backpacker scene, cafes, and easy walking to Mooloolaba Beach. Maroochydore is quieter, with cheaper dorms near the Cotton Tree end and good bus links. Dorm beds typically run A$35 to 60 a night, higher in school holidays. Staying in Alexandra Headland itself means mostly apartments and motels, which suit pairs or groups splitting a room (A$120 to 220), while the surf club and esplanade cafes are a short walk.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Alex Heads is a patrolled, well-managed beach, and the safest swimming is between the red and yellow flags in front of the surf club. Rips form along the headland rocks and after bigger swells, so ask the lifeguards where the gutters are. Stingers are occasional in summer, and the Queensland sun burns fast, especially from 10 am to 2 pm. Waves suit beginner surfers. Lock valuables in the car boot or skip bringing them, since opportunistic theft from towels does happen.

FAQFrequently asked questions about Alexandra Headland

Fly into Sunshine Coast Airport (about 15 minutes by car) or Brisbane Airport, roughly 1.5 hours by road. From Brisbane, trains run to Landsborough or Nambour, then Sunbus connects to Maroochydore and Alexandra Headland, taking about 2.5 to 3 hours in total. Rideshares from the Sunshine Coast Airport cost around A$30 to 45.
Swimming is good between the flags near the surf club, and the gentle point waves suit beginner and longboard surfers, with rentals nearby for about A$20 to 40 per hour. Snorkeling is poor because the water is sandy and often cloudy. Better snorkeling is at Mudjimba Island or Moffat Beach, a short drive away.
Yes, entry is free and open at all hours, with no gates or fees. Showers, toilets and barbecues beside the park are also free. Parking along the Esplanade is free but time-limited, so arrive early or walk from Mooloolaba.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackSumming up the experience

Go at dawn. The sun rises right over the water, the surf is cleaner before the wind picks up, and parking is easy. I would bring a rash vest and be back at a café before the weekend crowds arrive.

✈️ When did I visit Australia?
On my trip to New Zealand in 1993, I had a short stop in Australia as well.
