Coolum Beach is best known for Mount Coolum, the 208-meter volcanic lump that sits behind the sand like a sleeping dog. The beach is on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia, north of Brisbane. The surf is gentle enough for beginners, and the patrolled stretch is clean. Budget food is easy along the esplanade, but dorm beds are scarce. I still connect this place with the slap of thongs on hot boardwalk timber and the crackle of fish and chips paper. Skip the nightlife, which is tame. The rock pools at the northern headland are worth your time.

Backpackers come for the Mount Coolum summit climb, a steep, roughly 1.5-kilometer return scramble up stone steps that pays off with views from Noosa to Moreton Island. It also works as a quiet pause between Brisbane and Noosa, with a relaxed town center behind the beach where cafes and a supermarket keep self-caterers fed. 🛏️ Where to stay?Where staying makes the most sense

Stay in Coolum Beach village itself, around Birtwill Street and the Esplanade, because the surf club, cafes, supermarket and bus stop all sit within a 5 to 10 minute walk of the sand. This is a relaxed family and surfer town rather than a party hub, so the social side comes from the surf break, the beachfront cafes and the weekend market. Budget beds are limited here, so backpackers often choose Noosa Heads (about 25 minutes by road) or Mooloolaba (about 30 minutes) for a livelier hostel scene, then visit Coolum by bus. Self-catering units a block or two back from the beach are the best value for groups, at roughly A$120 to 220 a night.

Coolum is a patrolled, well-run beach, and the safest swim is always between the red and yellow flags in front of the surf club. Rips form along the beach, especially around the headland and when swells run large, so ask the lifeguards where the channels are. Jellyfish such as bluebottles show up occasionally on onshore winds. The Queensland sun is intense even in winter, so wear a rash shirt and reapply sunscreen. Theft is rare, but keep phones and wallets out of sight on the sand.

Coolum Beach is about 90 minutes north of Brisbane by road, and the easiest route without a car is a train from Brisbane to Nambour followed by a Translink bus. Buses from Maroochydore, 20 minutes away, also run regularly to the village. Sunshine Coast Airport is only about 15 minutes south by taxi or rideshare, and a fare is roughly A$30 to 45.
Coolum is good for swimming and surfing, but not snorkeling. Swimmers should stay between the flags near the surf club, which is patrolled daily, and beginner surfers can take lessons on the gentler beach breaks, around A$60 to 90 for a group session. Water clarity is usually too poor for snorkeling, and reef snorkeling is better done on a trip from Mooloolaba or Moreton Island.
Yes, Coolum Beach is free to visit, with no entry fee for the sand, the headland walk or the patrolled swim area. Street parking near the Esplanade is often free, though time limits of about 2 to 4 hours apply, and some car parks charge small fees at peak times. Showers and toilets at the surf club are free to use, while surf lessons and board hire cost extra.

The classic mistake is tackling Mount Coolum at midday with one small water bottle. Go at sunrise, carry at least a liter and a half, and save the beach for afterward. Swim only between the flags.
